How we met

Wendy tried the dating app, Bumble, and came across Justin's profile. She swiped right! She was very much into Taoism at that time and he was fascinated by her data analytics work.&nbsp;He "had some business in Collierville" and wanted to know if she would meet him for a drink at the Skybox on May 23, 2017. As soon as they saw each other, they knew!&nbsp;He was tall enough for her and he loved her curly hair.&nbsp;They watched their first Penguins hockey game together and the rest is history! Below is the picture of our first trip together to Nashville to see the Penguins play.

Our Story

The Westin Memphis Beale Street

Originally from Johnstown, PA but higher education has taken me to Philadelphia area, Wilmington, NC, Kent, OH, and Memphis since 2003.  I am a committed to my career and my students which spans almost 30 years. I have never met anyone like Wendy which leads to interesting conversations that are occasionally "passionate".  It is certainly a Ying and Yang thing. We are both supportive, argumentative and ready for this new journey. 

Justin Lawhead

Originally from Michigan, but spent time in Louisiana, Kansas and Tennessee.  I've met friends all along the way.  I'm  passionate about my work in technology and all sports.  Justin and I have a lot in common but we are different in so many ways.  He's usually pretty "reserved" being the Dean of Students -- while I have a little wild streak in me.   But this is what makes our relationship special.
 Looking forward to many more years as a dynamic duo!  Our lives have both improved exponentially since we met so it should be interesting to see what the future has planned for "Mr. & Mrs. Lawhead."

Wendy Brotherton

Wayne and I have known each other since 1986, when we started at the University of Pittsburgh. We were roommates for two years when five of us lived in a townhouse at Pitt. The thing should be condemned but somehow still stands. There are stories abound from the Pitt days and when we both lived in North Carolina when I worked at UNCW. We have maintained constant communication for over 30 years, and I was honored to serve as the godfather to his daughter.

Wayne DellaMaestra

Wendy met Aimee when she was working her internship in college for Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate in Shreveport, Louisiana.  Aimee has 2 boys and enjoys boating on the lakes, outdoor activities and watching Dallas Cowboys football.  She might even know Dak Prescott!  We were neighbors in Shreveport, LA and our kids used to play together.  I could always rely on Aimee to help with the family and have an awesome weekend planned at the lake.  One of the strongest and hard-working women I know, I'm proud to have her as a friend.

Greg and I came to know each other as board members for the National Association for Campus Activities, which is related to the work I performed before being Dean of Students. The board work wasn’t easy based on Association history and complexity of membership, but there was also a lot recreating (interpret that as you will), and that is where our friendship grew. Greg is from Wisconsin and I have been going to a Packer game for over 15 years now, and Wendy happens to be a Packer fan 😊. It is my favorite trip of the year, and the memories are significant from those annual get togethers. Greg is that friend from a distance who I don’t see often, but we step right back in when we connect.

Wendy met Patty while working for her father's engineering company, Koltanbar, in Troy, Michigan.  She is now married and has two boys who are all Michigan State fans. Plus, she is a huge Parrothead and loves Jimmy Buffet!  Patty has seen it all and nothing I ever tell her takes her by surprise.  She was always there when I needed her and I was a bridesmaid in her wedding to Paul.  If I think of Patty, the first thing that comes to my mind is "confident."  She is a great problem-solver and provided me some excellent advice. 

Patty Brewster

Jon and I have been friends since I stepped on this campus in 2003. We played lunch basketball together for over a decade. He was good, and I just pushed and fouled people. I am close to him and his wonderful family. He has been a constant support through all of my ups and downs at the U of M, including building a ramp for my wheelchair and a riser for my couch post knee surgery when I couldn’t bend my knees for six weeks. He likes beer.

Jon Duncan

Wendy met Jennifer at Michigan State University.  She was her big sister in Alpha Xi Delta.  Jen enjoys kickboxing, fitness and lives in Michigan with her partner, Joe. She also has an amazing son, Jayden, and loves Jeeps too!  When I think of Jen, I think of "kicking ass" because she is always active and on-the-go.  She has been through some tough times and has always been a great friend that I can reach out to when needed.   She also knows a lot of stories about me from college including bad tattoos and sorority parties.  Probably all things the Dean of Students had heard of before!

Jennifer Jamison

Colton came to the U of M the year after I started here. He is also a lunchtime basketball member. He convinced me to go on a river trip down the Mississippi, which we will amaze everyone else. We may have taken a golf cart through a drive-thru Wendy’s during a July 4th celebration. He is good for a cup of coffee and catching up on work and family life. He is always checking on me which I really appreciate.

Wendy met Mary Beth while working for her father's engineering company.  (Wow, that's 2 for bridesmaids!!!)  Mary Beth is a fan of ColorStreet nails and is married to her husband, Darren, and lives in Michigan.  MaryBeth might have been with me when I was learning the ropes of being a young adult in Detroit.  We might have spent some time frequenting local establishments and getting into some trouble!  But you could count on us having some delicious White Castles on Saturday morning at work.  :)

Schwab, selling Memphis-related products. The Rock 'n' Soul Museum includes costumes and interactive exhibits and locally brewed beer is featured at Wiseacre.
