Our Wedding

January 21st, 2022 Wendy and I didn’t know each other, but we were both out with friends seeing The Eye, our what-we-quickly-learned mutual friend Tyler Owen’s band. No six degrees in Omaha. Before the show, Wendy was inside Jake’s next door and I was on the sidewalk, talking to my friend Jim, lead guitarist for the band. Total shredder. As Jim and I were talking, I looked over his shoulder through the window. Wendy and I both tell it the same way - - we saw each other and pretty much stopped paying attention to our friends. Then came show time, I turned my attention to my friend Lee, who I came with, also a total shredder. We go in the Reverb and shortly thereafter, I saw Wendy! All I could think of was…the woman in the window is at the show! But, there was a problem, she was with a big group. I mean you cannot just walk up to her, so I just pestered Lee to speculate with me on if she was with someone! Later Wendy told me she went out on a lark that night and I was out on very rare night where I really didn’t want to go out. Lee wanted me to, because he thought I needed to, and he was right, for reason he thought so…he was right. The band took a break, I turn around, and there’s Wendy right in front of me. “Hi”. We talked and then, poof… she had to go because her friends were leaving. “Lee…what…who was that…how do I find her….ack!” The next day I get a Facebook message and it was Wendy. Turns out her daughter Madalyn pushed her to reach out. Wendy only knew my name was Kurt, let’ alone if it was with a K, the way God intended, but I guess if you put “Kurt Omaha” in Facebook you get me. I think we talked for a couple hours that day and then we fell in love and now we’re getting married. There was some stuff along the way. We have done a lot and especially travelled a lot. Both having feared empty nesting - we seem to be figuring it out. Probably the best travel story we have is Mexico for my nephew Curry and Jessica’s wedding. Only 30 days into knowing each other, I ask if she has a passport and wants to go to their wedding in Mexico in a month and she immediately said, Yes. When we got there, we had effectively only been dating six weeks. Seemed and still seems brave and maybe even crazy, but I remember my sister Dodie saying, “It seems like she’s always been here” and it did and it does. So now we always go see the Eye, we are thankful for everyone involved. It was by chance, I mean I haven’t even known Tyler as long as John Sunderland’s hair. There is a distinction in this story, however - while the meeting was chance, Madalyn pushing her mother, that wasn’t chance, that was love and I love her for this reason and a thousand others. To say that I’m glad I went out, is to say the least I can say. How possible and how thankfully I met the always lovely, Wendy Lynn!

With our wedding in downtown Omaha, we wanted to share some recommendations. Downtown is made up of several distinct areas, mostly within walking distance and the Farnam hotel, for those of you staying there, sits in middle. We are so glad you are joining us,but also hope you can grab a little time for yourselves while you’re here! The hotel sits on the south side of the Gene Leahy Mall and Wendy can tell you a lot about the building, having been involved in its extensive remodel. The mall is a beautifully redon park that extends east to the Missouri riverfront area. It is impressive and an especially good area to take kids. To the north, is NoDo, where the wedding will be held on the rooftop of The Blatt. It’s a little too far of a walk maybe, certainly to head to the wedding, but we have reserved a hotel car service. Immediately out the back door of the Farnam, is the Old Market, Omaha’s oldest entertainment district, and further south, Little Bohemia. The Old Market https://oldmarket.com The Old Market has some of our favorite restaurants and bars. M’s Pub, the scene of our first official date - and a place that goes back years for both of us, is great for lavash, steaks, salads, and old Omaha atmosphere. We like to just sit at the bar. Other favorites – and sisters of The Blatt, is Clio for Mediterranean, Memoir for a wide-ranging menu, and then around the corner to Cham Pang Lanes for a little duckpin bowling. Reservations recommended for these. If you want to while away some time…and you need time, check out La Buvette, a French grocery store focused on wine and charcutier. Otherwise, just walk just walk around Howard and Jackson Street area full of little shops, like Jackson St. Booksellers, Grapefruit Records, Raygun, and Tanenbaum for all your year-round Christmas needs. Maybe grab a drink at Mr. Toads, where we first met up (and where time stands still). If you want some culture, it’s quick to visit The Kaneko https://thekaneko.orgcontemporary art space just to the south. Little Bohemia https://www.omahaplaces.com/littlebohemia A regentrifying area, a ways south of the Old Market, with cool shops and bars. Not much for the kids here… Lumen for great microbrews, Beercade is old school arcade games (you can take the kids up to 7 pm) and check out some of our friends shops – Dusk Good & Gifts, the Greenhouse, Scout consignment shop, and Fontenelle for the hipster in all of us. Also…Fizzy’s for a burger and maybe a bourbon malt (must be 21 or over) and a favorite coffee spot, Archetype Coffee. Leahy Mall Right across the street from the Farnam, explore the beautifully redon park, it’s swings and slides and water features, to the riverfront. Head north and take the Bob Kerry pedestrian bridge to Iowa, then take the kids to the Luminarium https://kiewitluminarium.org a new interactive science museum (on the Omaha side…). https://theriverfrontomaha.com/visit-the-riverfront/gene-leahy-mall/ North Downtown https://www.visitomaha.com/things-to-do/neighborhoods/north-downtown/ The newest developing downtown area, NoDo is home to the Blatt, where we’ll all be on the rooftop Saturday night, the Charles Schwab field that hosts the College World Series, and some great places like, Dolomiti Pizzeria & Enoteca, Hook & Lime Mexican, Rally Coffee Co., the Slowdown, Saddle Creek Records music venue, Film Stream Theater, and the Trap Room, the office wedding dive bar.
