Do I need a visa to go to Taiwan? How do I get a visa?

If you are a US citizen, you are good to go. If you are a Chinese citizen living outside of China mainland, you could apply a tourist visa to enter Taiwan. The visa application is fast and easy, it's an online application, which does not require mailing in your passport. You could apply here: https://coa.immigration.gov.tw/coa-frontend/overseas-foreign-china. With the Visa, you would be able to fly into Taiwan from anywhere except China mainland. If you want to fly to Taiwan from China mainland, you would need to apply for an additional permit issued by China government. This process is not recommended.

I heard about the free $5,000 NTD Taiwan is giving away to the tourists. How do I get that?

Yes! This is a lottery program that Taiwan is handing out to sweeten the deal for your travel. Sign up on this page (https://5000.taiwan.net.tw/index_en.html) before your travel and go to the kiosk at the airport to try your luck once you arrive. (Rumor has it that there is daily maximum on the winners so you should have a high chance of winning if you arrive earlier in the day) Noted that Taiwanese citizen is not eligible :(

For our guests holding Chinese passport: After I visit Taiwan, can I fly to China?

If you are a Chinese citizen no matter with or without US green card, flying between China and Taiwan would be complicated. In general, you would need an additional permit issued by China government (大通证). The Taiwanese visa issued by Taiwan would let you in as long as you fly from anywhere outside of China mainland. Once you enter Taiwan, without the permit issued by China government, you would not be able to fly to China as passport is not accepted. Routing from a 3rd country or area like Japan or Hongkong might be feasible.
