Zack and Kali first met at college registration, in the Summer of 2015, before their freshman year at the University of Illinois. Zack was sitting in the computer lab making his schedule when Kali walked in and sat down next to him. Kali asked for help with the course registration system—partly because she needed it, but mostly because she thought he was cute. Zack wasn’t expecting to meet someone that day, let alone someone who’d change his life. But when he looked up, everything shifted. The two started talking and realized that they’d grown up in neighboring towns, had some mutual connections, and that they’d be living in the same freshman dorm. Zack and Kali left that day having signed up for some of the same classes, with a plan to stay in touch. On a campus so big, they felt good already knowing a familiar face. The pair kept in touch all summer and by the time school started, they’d become a big part of each other’s lives. The couple made the relationship official in January 2016 and spent the rest of college making memories—from working together at a local bar and grill, to date parties, to exploring Australia and Bali when Zack visited Kali abroad. After graduation, life took them in different directions for a while as they focused on their personal growth. But as fate would have it, Zack and Kali found their way back to each other in April 2021. From that point on, everything just felt right. The two moved into their first Chicago apartment in March 2022, a place filled with love and laughter—and, as it turns out, the perfect spot for a proposal. Though Zack had big plans in mind, he ended up proposing spontaneously one cozy night at home. It was a perfect and private moment that Zack and Kali will cherish forever. And of course, Kali said YES!
