We encourage our guests to enjoy the gardens during cocktail hour.
Leach Botanical Garden is named after John and Lilla Leach who, in 1931, purchased the property and named it Sleepy Hollow. Together, they devoted their land to their fascination with plants creating a botanical collection of more than 2,000 species. Lilla discovered five plant species new to science. John was a talented craftsman and very proficient at metalwork, some of which you can find in the Garden.
The Garden was given to the City of Portland by the Leach Family and has operated as a public garden for nearly thirty years.
"One of Portland's hidden gems, the Garden offers unexpected beauty, moments of respite and contemplation, sources of inspiration for art and music and culture, and sparks curiosity about the natural world around us to preserve the legacy of the Garden’s founders."
