What is a "no-host event?
A "no-host" event is one where invited guest are expected to pay for their own food and beverage.
What should I plan to wear?
For the wedding events we encourage the following: Welcome To Paris Reception - casual. Wedding Celebration - fancy and elegant. We are going all out so feel to do the same. A warm layer is recommended for this one. Le Brunch - casual. For all non-wedding event attire we recommend planning for all weather conditions. Typical early April weather history in Paris is favorable with highs in the low 60s and lows in the mid 40s and limited precipitation. Fingers crossed!
What museums do you suggest?
There are about 130 museums within Paris city limits so visiting museums can be a full time job, but having said that, there is a museum for almost every interest. Here is a comprehensive list. https://tinyurl.com/4wms46ev .
We think the must see are: The Louvre - we recommend a Viator skip the line highlights tour. Musee de Orsay - almost exclusively French artists including the Impressionist Masters. If you only do one, this is our recommendation. The Orsay is closed on Monday and tickets are available online. Musee Foundation Louis Vuitton - it's not a luggage and garment exhibit! We recently saw a stunning Claude Monet vs. Joan Mitchell comparison exhibit, with some of Monet's later work from Giverny that had never been exhibited together.
Will my cell phone work in Paris?
If your phone has the 900 and the 1800 MHz networks, it will work in France with your current carrier. Many of AT&T’s and T-mobile phones do have these extra networks for international use. Handsets provided by other carriers such as Verizon and Sprint on the other hand, with a few exceptions, do not have the correct networks.
With AT&T there is a flat rate $10/day charge for unlimited text messaging and calling within France and back to the US. Check with your service provider before leaving the US.
I want to get a rental car. What do you suggest?
First go to your usual rental car provider in the US and book it as usual. The cost is substantially less that renting upon arrival. National Rental Car and Euro Rental Car are partners.
It is suggested that only those who drive daily in major cities drive in Paris. It is guaranteed, if you find yourself in the Etoille ( 12 streets entering a single roundabout) you will face one of the great driving tests of the world. Driving on excursions outside of Paris is very much like a US road trip. Pick up your rental car from a city location just before exiting the city.
Is there a safety issue on Paris public transportation (METRO / RER / BUS)?
The short answer is no, but as with any major city there are skilled pick pocketers to be aware of and accounted for. Be mindful of crowded situations and keep your valuables close. Avoid sticking out as a tourist as much as possible. Plan your route before you go, seek advice from your Hotel Concierge, and become familiar with using Google maps for public transportation.
Do I need to get Euros before leaving the US?
We never buy Euros in the US. Exchange fees are high and exchange rates are generally less favorable. You can use a US bank debit card and US credit cards with cash withdrawal privileges at most Paris ATMs to withdraw euros directly from your US bank account or credit card cash withdrawal limits. Exchange rates are usually much more favorable using ATMs .
Should I tip when paying the check in a restaurant in France?
Nearly all restaurants operate on a cashless system. Your server will take you payment at the table with a small handheld device. The check is "service compre" which loosely means the tips is included in the bill. But, if you feel the service was exceptional or the server did a great job of helping you to understand the menu - in English, then please feel free to leave an addition 5-10% of the check total, before tip and tax, in cash. This is usually no opportunity for gratuity to be added to the check as a part of your credit card payment.
What is the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and will ETIAS authorization be required in April 2024?
ETIAS - is not scheduled to go into effect May 1 2024 - will not be need for Travel to any EU Country in April - will update here, if any changes are made to implementation date for ETIAS.
ETIAS is a largely automated IT system created to identify security, irregular migration, or high epidemic risks posed by visa-exempt visitors travelling to the 26 European countries that have abolished boarders, forming the current European Union. At this time, non-EU nationals (including USA passport holders) who do not currently need a visa to travel to any EU Country will have to apply for a travel authorization through the ETIAS system prior to their trip. The ETIAS system is currently forecast to be in place in February 2024. This date is the 4th delay in implementation - we will update this information as soon as more is known. The online ETIAS application process will cost €7. Your airline will also serve as a source for ETIAS updates.
