Kurt and Alanna met the very first day of Alanna's new job at Eanes ISD when she moved to Austin, Texas in August of 2014. Kurt was working as the trumpet teacher for the middle school summer camp week, and Alanna was newly hired as the assistant band director at West Ridge Middle School. As they saw each other regularly at school, their friendship grew through the years.

Early in 2018, Alanna's interest in Kurt changed. Both performed in the Westlake High School musical in February, and their friends could see something was different. Unknowingly, Kurt went out on their first date at the end of that week to Red's Front Porch. Their relationship and feelings for each other grew quickly. After a few months, both knew that this relationship was something special. Their first year together flew by- highlighted by family reunions, their first vacation together, Thanksgiving in Louisiana, and Christmas together in Austin.

Kurt proposed to Alanna in April of 2019. That day he was working a baseball game for the Longhorn Network and had the assistance of his coworkers for planning the details of the evening. After enjoying a nice dinner at Eddie V's, the couple returned to the house and Kurt offered Alanna a glass of wine on the back patio. The lights in the trees were lit as were a number of candles spread around the patio and yard. As Alanna sat and waited for Kurt to return with his drink, Riley popped out of the back door wearing a fancy black bow tie. That was the moment that she knew. Kurt followed Riley out the door, got down on his knee, and proposed in their favorite place to relax together.
