Our story starts back, back in Culver days in the Fall of our senior year. We had met in passing a few times over our first three years there but didn't truly get to know each other until we took the same English class in our penultimate semester. We agreed to meet over the weekend to study for an upcoming vocabulary quiz. Emily showed up with her backpack overflowing with study materials, ready to get to work. Alec showed up with a guitar and without any intention to learn what “perambulate” meant. Alec played, Emily sang, and we laughed and talked for hours. We parted ways knowing that something felt special but, entirely unaware of the journey we started that day.
Fast forward a few years to COLLEGE! We dated long-distance, traveling between Nashville, TN, and Bloomington, IN. Either by driving, hitching a ride with a friend, or jumping on a Greyhound, we did our best to close the distance between Vanderbilt and IU. We spent weekends, vacations, and summers together. In due time, we found ourselves in cap and gown, months away from our greatest adventure together yet.
We moved to Miami, Florida together in the Summer of 2018. Neither of us thought we would ever call ourselves Florida residents. But not being ones to turn down an adventure together, when Alec was offered a job in Miami, we both agreed it would be the next chapter in our story. While living in South Florida certainly took some adjusting, we settled in and found in it the first place we would call our home.
In March of 2020, the world moved out of the office, into the home, and locked the door for months. With both of us working remotely, Florida being disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, and the prospect of not paying rent, we took a short hiatus from Miami and moved to Alec’s hometown for the summer months. It was during those months Alec was sure he had found his better half and the person he would be with forever, and he was going to ask her to marry him. He kept this secret very closely held as he planned for weeks, telling only two people in those days leading up to it (he still maintains the three-hour notice he gave his dad was sufficient). Emily is impossible to surprise, and he knew this was the one he had to pull off. In an arboretum in Valparaiso, Indiana, Alec got down on one knee, opened the ring box, and asked “Emily, will you marry me?” The surprise was successful; she was tongue-tied until she decided on those now immortal words: “Are you sure?” Eventually, she remembered to say “Yes!” and, with a hug and a kiss, we began our forever.
It only felt right to take our engagement photos in Culver Indiana!
