Some Recommendations from Us!

We appreciate you coming all this way to celebrate with us! Fernie holds a special spot in our hearts, and while you're here, we wanted to share a few of our favourite things to do while in Fernie. We hope you can partake, and enjoy Fernie as much as we do!

Food and Coffee

Big Bang Bagels - Great for Breakfast or Brunch! The line can be long!

Freshies Cafe - A great stop for a coffee or hot beverage!

The Bridge Bistro - Located along the river with a great patio!

Nevado's - Tapas, Taco's and To-Die-For Margaritas!

Yama Goya - Go to Sushi spot in town! Note that the lines can be very long and they do not allow reservations.

The Northern - Pub style food with frequent live music - nice main street patio if weather permits.

Fernie Brewing Company - For locally brewed beers and a great patio, this is a great option.

Fernie Taphouse - Great Pub style food and large draft beer list.

Happy Cow Ice Cream - Ice cream we LOVE! Handcrafted ice cream in many flavours. We love the Honeycomb and Huckleberry!

Hiking and Nature Walks

There are numerous hikes around the town of Fernie with varying degrees of difficulty and length depending on your preference or time constraints! Some recommendations below:

Mt. Fernie (3-5hrs round trip - summit): Fernie's namesake hike is an out-and-back hike that takes you to the top of Mt. Fernie and gives you a 360 view of the Elk Valley, town of Fernie and surrounding mountain range. This can be considered a more challenging hike with a light scramble at the top - elevation gain of 949m.

Fairy Creek Trail ( ~1hr round trip): A low elevation hike that takes you to a beautiful waterfall, coincidentally where we got engaged. Considered an easy hike - elevation gain of 132m.

Old Growth Trail (1.5-2hr round trip): A lovely hike through Fernie's protected old growth forest. Well shaded and navigates through cedar trees that are approximately 800 years old with some trees having diameters of over 10 feet. The trail opens up at the beautiful Island Lake Lodge. Considered a moderate hike - elevation gain of 233m.

Island Lake Loop Trail (~30mins loop): This hike wraps the perimeter of island lake and offers great views of the surrounding mountains and lake with very little elevation gain. Considered an easy hike - elevation gain of 37m.

Other Outdoor Activities

Golf - Located in the town of Fernie, the local golf course is very well maintained and has stunning views off nearly every tee box. Would recommend booking in advance.

Walk Downtown - Fernie's main street has extensive shops to suit any and all shopping needs and is lined with coffee shops and restaurant patios that parallel main street and offer great views of Fernie Alpine Resort. Alex likes to pop in to Frejya, No.3, and the Fernie Arts Co-op. Dan enjoys Edge of the World and Commit.

Biking - Similar to some of the recommended hiking trails, Fernie offers a comprehensive assortment of biking trails that can be curated to all skill levels. Bike rentals are available in town or on the ski hill if feeling adventurous

- Ride along the river pathway (Easy)

- Lazy Lizard - Can either ride up and back down (2 hours) or

shuttle to Island Lake Lodge and ride down (15-20mins).

Considered family friendly and easy/moderate skill level.

- Fernie Alpine Resort - The resort offers trails for all skill

levels and is a great option if you'd like to focus on riding

downhill instead of uphill!

Disc Golf - Located in James White Park, there is a walk-on disc-golf, aka. Frolf, course with 18 holes. Ideal for a quick 1.5hr outing with a couple stocked beverages for the walk.

Silver Springs Cliff Jumping - Silver Springs is a gorgeous glacial lake that offers a great place for going for a swim, or, if you're feeling more adventurous, a series of perfect cliff jumping opportunities, ranging from 5 feet-60 feet. Silver springs is ~30 minute drive away from Fernie, followed by a 15-20minute hike to the lake. Ideal for a cool down on a hot day. Click here or on the title of this section to see directions.

River Float - For a hot July day, a float down the river on a raft can be a great option to cool off and usually last ~1hr. Beverages of your choice are highly recommended! If you have rafts already and wish to do a river float, please plan to bring them, or otherwise, the Kondor 2000 from the local Canadian Tire is a cost-effective option. A float down the river generally requires two vehicles for purpose of a shuttle. See below for information on put-in/take-out instructions (personal preference is put-in at the north Fernie bridge and take-out at James White Park):

Putting into the Elk River & Taking Out.

For float trips the put in is Annex Park or around the North Fernie bridge and the take out is at Dogwood Park or James White Park. Plan ahead of time as they are not clearly marked locations. There is a new hand launch ramp along the Fernie Valley Pathway just down stream of the North Fernie Bridge. You can park in Annex Park parking lot, but you'll need to carry your water craft to the hand launch. For those parking near the North Fernie Bridge please park with caution and be aware of the adjacent highway traffic at all times.

The main take out is at Dogwood Park & Boat Launch after the West Fernie Bridge, on river left. Be cautious of fly fishing drift boats and other river users. Do not block the boat launch. Another take out option is the small beach area at James White Park, just down river and around the bend from Dogwood on river left.

Fishing - The Elk River is one of the best river fisheries in Canada and offers some of the best dry-fly fishing in North America. Primary species of fish are cutthroat trout and bull trout. Dave, Dan, and Steve will have many spot/fly recommendations and fish tales to share with you if interested. Steve Reed is a Fernie Fishing Guide through the summers! Note that licenses are required to fish.

Tennis - Tennis courts are located in James White Park and while there are limited court availabilities, they generally aren't in too high of demand.

Beach Hang Out by the River - Also located in James White Park, there are a few easily accessible beach spots adjacent to the river that are ideal for lounging, going for a river swim and having a few beveragino's!
