Important notice: the US is recommending a negative Covid test before returning from international travel. Riu is providing tests at no cost that can be given up to 3 days before departure. In the unlikely event that someone tests positive Riu will provide free accommodation for up to 10 days. *info provided from Riu*
Are passports required to visit Cabo?
Yes, everyone will need a valid passport that is not set to expire within 6 months of the travel dates in order to visit Mexico. If your passport expiration date is in 2021, we recommend renewing at the beginning of the year,
When do I need to book my room by?
All rooms must be booked and fully paid by January 2021. A deposit is required upon booking. More info can be found in the Travel section of the website.
Do I need to stay at the resort or can I stay at a different hotel or AirBnb?
We recommend staying at the resort for a couple of reasons. If you reserve a room in our block you can book at the group rate. Also, if you aren't staying on the property you will be charged a fee to enter the resort for the wedding (last we heard was $100 per day) or any other activities we may plan for that weekend at the resort.
When should I arrive in Cabo for the wedding?
The room block is reserved from Sunday April 11 to Sunday April 18. Feel free to book any time during this range. If you wish to stay longer at the resort than the 18th your nightly rate might change. See the Travel tab or email carey@beachbumvacation.com for booking info or any other travel-related questions. For those guests that are arriving earlier in the week, we will be around so come hang :)
Do I need to stay in the resort the entire time I'm in Cabo?
Absolutely not. The resort is all-inclusive, meaning all food and drink are covered as part of your room cost. There are several restaurants and bars at the resort, as well as 2 large pools, a coffee cafe, and a gym. However if you want to utilize the spa or book any type of water sport, there is an additional cost. So technically there is no need to travel outside of the resort if you don't want to.
There are 2 other Riu resorts adjacent to Riu Palace--your stay at Riu Palace allows access to both Riu Santa Fe and Riu Baja California. You can use their pools, buffet restaurant, bars, and sit in the lounge and lobby areas, but not eat at the specialty restaurants or use their spa.
There are taxis and Uber available if you would like to leave the resort and explore Mexico! Suggestions: the marina area is about a mile and a half walk down the beach (~40 min) or a 10 min car ride. The concierge in the lobby can call a taxi or shuttle for you (note that it is easier to pay in cash for these rides). The airport is about a 40 min ride from the resort. The town of San Jose del Cabo is about a half hour from the resort and is an authentic Mexican town, while Cabo San Lucas has a more Americanized feel.
Is Cabo safe?
The resort is located behind a 24/7 guarded wall and any vehicle entering or leaving is subjected to a screening. The beach area behind the resort and the surrounding area is secluded and limited to patrons of the neighboring resorts, plus vendors selling things like blankets, jewelry, and souvenirs. These people are Cabo locals--they may try to heckle you to buy things from them but are harmless.
We have been to lots of places outside of the resort and have not had any negative experiences. People are nice and there is a good mix of both locals and vacationers. Cabo is in the Baja peninsula, separated from the bulk of the country and from serious drug or crime activity.
What about Covid-19?
We have been keeping an eye on the situation in Mexico. At time of editing this (December 2020) resorts and restaurants in Cabo have been increasingly reopening with added precautions such as extra cleaning and temperature screenings, and masks required in public or indoor places. It is not recommended to travel if you are feeling sick or have recently come into contact with someone who later tested postive for Covid-19. We traveled to Cabo in November and felt completely safe. We wore masks for our entire flights and were provided with disenfectant wipes to use on the plane. The resort was at 50% capacity and we had plenty of room to distance at the pool. Masks were required while walking through restaurants and the main lobby and bar areas, and were encouraged while walking to and from your room. Restaurant seating was similar to in the US with every other table occupied.
Are there going to be other wedding related events besides the ceremony and reception?
Yes! Here's a tentative outline that will be updated as we get closer to the event.
Wednesday April 14th: meet and greet cocktail hour to kick off the festivities
Thursday April 15: catamaran cruise hosted by the bride and groom
Friday April 16: rehearsal dinner
Saturday April 17: wedding and reception
Sunday April 18: buffet brunch with the bride and groom
There will be a larger reception in Indianapolis in summer of 2021, date and location TBD .
Do I need to bring cash with me? Or exchange US dollars for Mexican pesos?
We recommend having $1 bills handy if you want to tip your housekeeper, wait staff at the restaurant, or bartender. They appreciate it! We also recommend bringing cash if you take a taxi cab, and to tip the cab or shuttle drivers. Most external shops, bars, and restaurants accept credit cards.
Changing to pesos is not mandatory, but you can do so in the airport if you wish. Due to the high amount of visitors, the majority of places will accept US dollars.
What is the food situation like at the resort?
There is a buffet restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has a variety of options. There is a smaller snack bar available throughout the day as well.
Specialty restaurants: Japanese (dinner only), Indian (dinner only), steakhouse (dinner only and requires reservation), fusion (dinner only and requires reservation), Mexican/Italian (lunch and dinner).
There is also 24-hr room service with a small snack menu available.
Bars: there are several fully stocked bars at the resort. We recommend the Miami Vice frozen cocktail! Dos Equis and Dos Equis Ambar are the only draft beers available.
Each fridge in the room is stocked daily with bottled water, soda, Dos Equis, and juice. There is also a liquor dispenser containing vodka, tequila, and rum. If you have a specific request or need a replenishment on any beverages, please let the front desk know.
Can I drink the water?
IMPORTANT: it is not recommended to drink tap water in Cabo. The resort has plenty of bottled water on hand. The tap water is fine for hand washing and showering.
Can I keep valuables in my room?
There is a small safe in each room's closet where you can store valuables such as passports, credit cards, money, and jewelry.
What if I am traveling alone? Can I share a room with someone else that is also traveling alone?
We encourage room sharing and splitting the cost of the room. Each room can hold 3 adults, or 2 adults and 2 kids. If you are planning on coming to the wedding alone, please reach out to either of us and we will help you find someone that is open to a roommate. If you want to have your own room to yourself, that is fine.
What's the weather like in Cabo?
Expect sunny weather and temps to range from high 70s-high 80s throughout the day in April. It gets a bit windy at night, so I would recommend bringing something like a jean jacket just in case.
