Out of Towners may not understand the big deal over having a whole table dedicated to cookies at a wedding, but to Pittsburghers, it is a non-negotiable.
The tradition traces back to the Great Depression when money was tight and elaborate desserts were out of the picture, family and friends would join together to bake cookies from scratch for the wedding using recipes that had been passed down for generations.
As the tradition gained popularity, it became a treasured tradition of celebration- so much so, there are even vendors in the region dedicated to the table!
If you'd like to learn more about the tradition, there are blogs, websites, Wikipedia pages, and even facebook groups dedicated to explaining the history, sharing images, or even swapping recipes.
