An iconic destination inextricably woven into the fabric of the city, The Brown Hotel is opulent yet approachable – like a fine Kentucky bourbon that never overwhelms you with its history but instead entertains you with a lifetime of colorful stories.
Behind its striking Georgian-Revival façade is a blend of Old World elegance and modern-day comfort, a place where generations of Louisville’s finest have celebrated weddings and anniversaries, and corporate meeting planners have discovered unerring style and sophistication. Now nearing its centennial, The Brown Hotel reflects the rich heritage and Southern gentility that has made Louisville a hot spot for bluegrass enthusiasts, bourbon drinkers, equestrians, and Derby Day revelers.

In the early 1800s, the original Galt House was a residence owned by Dr. W.C. Galt on Louisville's waterfront. In 1835, a 60-room hotel was opened as the Galt House Hotel across the street from the residence at the northeast corner of First and Main.
Over half of a century later, in 1972, Galt House Hotel was reestablished by developer Al J. Schneider as part of Louisville’s Riverfront Urban Renewal Project. Carpenter by trade, built the 25 stories high West Tower on the banks of the Ohio River. Galt House Hotel continued to expand with the creation of the East Tower in 1984. Galt House Hotel remains Louisville’s only waterfront hotel.
