The Douro Valley is a wine region in the interior of Portugal.
It is mountainous with craftfully terraced hillsides, originally carved to save the regions cash crop, grapes, from a contagious blight, during the turn of the 20th century.
It is the first instance of an AOC/DOC (Regionally Controlled jurisdiction of Wine Production) in the world, and the only place in the world that can grow the grapes for Port wine.
