Parte ViejaThe heart of San Sebastián, Parte Vieja is full of charm and energy. It's home to the city’s famous pintxo bars, narrow cobblestone streets and historic architecture.Parte Vieja can get quite loud at night during the summer. For a quieter stay, we recommend looking in another area of town or for places along the perimeter of Parte Vieja, near the river or ocean. CentroCentrally located and elegant, Centro is known for its beautiful boulevards, boutique shopping and cafes. This area is quiet at night and very well located. La ConchaSituated along the iconic crescent-shaped beach, La Concha offers stunning views and easy beach access. It’s much quieter than Parte Vieja and still just a short stroll from all the city's highlights. Gros / Zurriola BeachTrendy and more local-feeling, Gros is known for its surf scene, modern cafes and laid-back vibe. It’s just across the river from Parte Vieja and Centro and an easy walk to all parts of the city. San Sebastián is a small, very walkable city so if you stay in any of the neighborhoods above, everything is within easy reach!

About San Sebastian

For guests staying at a hotel, airport transfers can be arranged directly through the hotel concierge. If coming through Bilbao here is the link for bus tickets. You’ll definitely want to book them ahead of time (around a week in advance) just to make sure you have a spot because they sometimes do fill up. Another option is a private car or van through a group called Vallina. They can arrange rides from any of the local airports. Bilbao Airport (BIO)

Flying from the US: Bilbao is the most straightforward option for international travelers, with one-stop flights from many U.S. cities via major European hubs (e.g., Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt). The most convenient way to reach San Sebastián from Bilbao Airport is by direct bus. The bus departs right outside the airport terminal and takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, offering beautiful views through the countryside. Departures: Every hour at :45 past the hour from the airport (When booking online, select Aeropuerto Bilbao as the location, not "Bilbao" or you will be taken to the city center)Return trips: From San Sebastián city center every hour on the hour.Arrival location in San Sebastián:Federico García Lorca Street, 1 — 20014 Donostia (main bus station) You can book tickets online at <a href="https://www.pesa.net/pesa/horariosBD/ctrl_horarios.php?lang=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">pesa.net</a> or buy your ticket at the airport from the kiosk when you get off the plane.We recommend booking online ahead of time (about one week) if taking the bus to ensure there will be a spot.

San Sebastian Airport (EAS)

Flying from the US: You will likely need to book separate tickets to fly into San Sebastián. For example, we flew SFO to Barcelona on United, then booked a separate Vueling flight to San Sebastián. If you are traveling elsewhere in Europe before, you may be able to fly directly into EAS. San Sebastián Airport is a small regional airport located about 25 minutes from the city center. The easiest way to get into town is by taxi, which costs approximately €40–€50 and is readily available outside the arrivals terminal. If you need to call a taxi directly, you can reach Taxi Gipuzkoa at +34 943 400 500.

Biarritz Airport (BIQ)

Flying from the US: You’ll usually fly to Paris or Madrid and then book a separate short flight to Biarritz. This is a good route if you're planning to explore France beforehand. Biarritz Airport is located just across the border in France, about 50 km (30 miles) from San Sebastián. You can take a direct bus from the airport to city center. Pintxo hopping in San Sebastián is a Basque culinary tradition that combines food, drinks and socializing. A pinxto is an appetizer that can be eaten in a few bites and is intended to be accompanied by beer, cider or wine.Midday (11:00 AM–2:00 PM) and evening (7:00 PM–11:00 PM) are prime times for pintxos. Pinxto bars can get very busy and are a unique experience so we have included some tips and a list of some of our favorite spots in Parte Vieja. A Few Items Per Bar: Most locals will tell you that the true way to enjoy pinxtos is to sample one or two pintxos at each bar before moving on.Bar Display vs. Blackboard: Cold pintxos are typically displayed on the bar, while hot, made-to-order options are listed on a blackboard behind the counter. You are not going to want to miss the hot options.Signature Dishes: Each bar often has a specialty. Don't hesitate to ask the bartender for recommendations. Hike up Mount Urgull to the iconic Jesus statue and enjoy sweeping views over the city and sea, it is especially magical at sunset. Along the way, you can explore a historical fortress or stop for a drink at Urgulleko Polboriña (check opening hours in advance!).

This stunning coastal hike begins in San Sebastian and follows the cliffs eastward to the charming fishing village of Pasajes. Make sure you follow the signs for "Pasaia" when on the trail. The correct markers have a white rectangle over a red rectangle.

Spend a relaxing day on the beach at La Concha or head to Zurriola for a more active vibe with surfers and beach volleyball. Both beaches are easily walkable from the city center.

Overlooking La Concha Bay, La Perla offers a luxurious wellness experience with its historic thermal baths, hydrotherapy pools, and spa services. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after hiking or sightseeing. La Perla also has a full gym. You can purchase day passes to either. There is also direct access to the beach to swim in La Concha and then shower at La Perla after your workout or spa day.

Bodega Txakoli Rezabal

Take a small ferry across the bay to Santa Clara Island for a relaxing day of swimming, exploring, and sunbathing. The island also has a seasonal beach bar and beautiful views back toward the city. Our wedding planners told us locals normally take the ferry to the island and spend time on the beach there to avoid the mid-summer crowds.
