What to Expect
What is the weather like during the summer in Alaska?
In July, temperatures in the Mat-Su Valley range from 55
-75°F, but Alaska weather loves to keep things interesting! We recommend packing layers, including light sweaters, a warm jacket, and a raincoat just in case. Comfortable shoes are a must if you’re planning to explore. This way, you’ll be ready for whatever Alaska throws your way!
Is there really 24 hours of daylight?
Not quite, but it sure feels like it! In early July, the Mat-Su Valley gets around 19-20 hours of daylight, with only a few hours of twilight in between. While it doesn’t stay fully light for 24 hours, the sun only dips a little below the horizon, so it’s still bright enough to keep you on your toes—especially if you're not used to it!
The extended daylight can make it tricky to get a restful night’s sleep, so if you're sensitive to light, you might want to bring a sleep mask to block it out. It’s also a good idea to pack sunglasses, as the constant daylight can make it feel like the sun’s always shining in your face. Even though it’s cooler, the sunlight can still be quite strong, so don't forget to bring sunscreen, especially if you plan to spend time outside. Protecting your skin is key, as the Alaskan sun can be deceptively intense, even on chillier days.
How does tourist season effect things?
In Alaska, summer is peak tourist season, and the Mat-Su Valley sees more visitors from mid-May to September. This means higher demand for accommodations, activities, and restaurants. While some places may be busier, it also means more options and services are available, such as guided tours and local events.
The summer season offers long days and a great chance to enjoy Alaska’s outdoor activities and landscapes. To make the most of it, it's a good idea to book your trip and lodging early, as things can fill up quickly. With some planning, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy everything the area has to offer.
What do I need to know about wildlife?
While the wildlife in Alaska is part of what makes it so special, don’t worry—it's not as wild as you might think. In the Wasilla area, bear encounters are rare, but it’s still a good idea to be aware of your surroundings when you’re out and about.
Bears: Though bears aren’t common in Wasilla itself, we do have them in the surrounding areas. If you're hiking or spending time outdoors, it’s always a good idea to carry bear spray and make some noise while walking to avoid surprising one.
Moose: Moose are more likely to be seen around town, and while they’re usually calm, they can be unpredictable. Just keep your distance and be cautious while driving, as they like to wander onto roads.
Other wildlife, like caribou or foxes, are around but typically keep to themselves. Just remember to respect their space and keep things safe.
We want you to enjoy everything about Alaska, including the wildlife, so if you see something exciting, be sure to admire it from a safe distance!
