If you want to connect with the soul of San Miguel, begin at El Jardin. Originating from Spanish tradition over 500 years ago, every town in Mexico features a central town square (or zocalo) regardless of whether the town has 500 or 50,000 inhabitants. The zocalo is the social center of the town where friends comes to meet, gossip and be part of the community. Visiting El Jardin in San Miguel takes you back to a time before TV and air conditioning kept everyone indoors, instead of socializing outside with their fellow townspeople.
On any given morning, you'll also find ex-pats and tourists lined up on the benches near the south side of El Jardin. Often called 'Gringo Gulch' for that reason, it's still a vital place for locals. Visit the square in the early evening or on weekend afternoons when there are few tourists and mostly locals congregating. Particularly on the weekend, you'll find a number of vendors selling trinkets and food, mariachis playing in the distance and friends of all ages discussing their lives. El Jardin is the beating heart, the lifeblood of the culture and social interaction of its locals.
A mere 15 miles west of San Miguel lies the curious and cosmic Cañada de la Virgen Pyramid. With estimates that it was built around 540 AD, the series of four pyramids feature a burial ground for the 6th-century Mexican elite, an observatory and a celestial clock aligned to the rising and setting sun. The pyramids are quite fascinating for those with an interest in archaeology or history, created with extreme detail that aligns with not only the sun, but planets and stars. Daily tours are available, but be sure to book through a legitimate company like Coyote Canyon Adventures to ensure your guide is knowledgeable and speaks English.
Mercado Centro San Miguel

A hamburger stand making truly incredible hamburgers, a good pizza place, gelato, and so much more!
Artisan Market
In this handicrafts market, some of the techniques and the materials that the artisans of the region utilize can be observed and bought, including brass, wool, carved quarry stone and mesquite wood, papier maché, blown glass, jewelry and pottery, carved stones and antiques. There is an immense number of stands at every turn that offer beautiful crafts, sure to delight all visitors.
Mercado de San Juan de Dios
Located about six blocks from the Jardín, this mercado is the newest of the covered markets. Built in 1992, it is frequented mainly by the Mexican population and it is very colorful. Most of the stands sell fruits and vegetables but some fantastic authentic local food can be found here too.
Fábrica La Aurora Art Design and Center
A textile factory for over 90 years, today this century-old building has been reborn as an art and design center. Maintaining its original façade and structure, large open areas once filled with spindles and looms for making thread and weaving cloth have been transformed into outstanding art studios and galleries, antique showrooms, and interior design and specialty shops in San Miguel de Allende.
