Lake Bohinj is tucked in the heart of the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, about 60 minutes from Ljubljana and surrounded by Triglav National Park — a stunning but somewhat remote location.
Here’s everything you need to know about getting there:
By Air ✈️
The closest and most convenient airport is Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) — approximately 1 hour by car from Lake Bohinj.
However, several nearby international airports offer good options, often with more direct flights from the U.S. and Europe:
✈️ Ljubljana (LJU) – ~1.5 hours by car
✈️ Venice Marco Polo (VCE) – ~3.5 hours by car
✈️ Zagreb (ZAG) – ~3 hours by car
✈️ Munich (MUC) – ~4.5 hours by car
✈️ Vienna (VIE) – ~4.5 to 5 hours by car
Most guests traveling from Denver or Chicago will likely connect through Frankfurt, Munich, London, or Paris.
By Car 🚘
We recommend renting a car, as public transport to Bohinj is limited and the area is best explored with your own wheels.
🚘 Driving Notes
If you plan to rent a car, please note that Slovenia requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your regular U.S. driver’s license. You can get one through AAA or AATA. You will also need a vignette (toll sticker) for highway use — available at gas stations and rental counters in Slovenia.
🚗 Transportation Options
We may offer group transportation from Ljubljana for guests arriving at similar times, and will share more details closer to the wedding. In the meantime, renting a car remains the easiest and most flexible way to explore and enjoy Slovenia.
