These are hiking & walking trails within the ski resort (Palisades) that our wedding is taking place.
Shirley Canyon in Olympic Valley is strenuous but a treat. Start at the end of Shirley Canyon Road (behind the Palisades Tram building). The trail alternately meanders through shady forests and climbs up steep granite slabs and boulders, eventually reaching Shirley Lake. Take a swim at the lake, then continue up to High Camp (top of Palisades) and ride the tram down (no charge for downloading).
Five Lakes is another local favorite. The trailhead is on Alpine Meadows Road about halfway between Hwy 89 and the Alpine Meadows parking lot. The trail climbs about 2 miles up to a basin with five small lakes. The second and third lakes are great for swimming!
Olympic Valley Park is situated at the beginning of the valley, and has multiple pickleball courts for those wishing to play.
There is a bike trail system paralleling Olympic Valley Rd and continues along the river
Rent bikes in Olympic Valley
Take a scenic Aerial Tram ride to High Camp with views of Lake Tahoe. Once you're up top, enjoy the Olympic Museum, the Washoe Display, dining experiences, and other free activities. It's planned to be open on Saturday 6/15 and Sunday 6/16.
The Tahoe Via Ferrata is a recent addition to Olympic valley. Think of the Tahoe Via Ferrata as an assisted climbing activity. It transforms once complex and impassable terrain into a fun and accessible course. The course can only be done guided by Alpenglow Expeditions, a highly reputable group that runs expeditions around the world.
37 (free) public piers on Donner Lake are spread out along Donner Pass Rd. on the North Side of the lake. Enjoy some sun rays, have a picnic, and take a dip in the lake from the piers provided by TDRPD. Parking is roadside along Donner Pass Rd. There is no overnight parking (strictly enforced --make sure you don't have any part of your car in the bike lane or else you might get a ticket) in many sections along the road, with parking prohibited between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am. There are no reservations available for the piers.
The Donner Summit tunnels straddle the Crest of the Sierra Nevada. These tunnels were built for the first transcontinental railroad, and have since been abandoned as Union Pacific built new ones. They make for a unique and fun hike, exploring the history and geography of the region.
Explore the history of the area and the people who came into this part of the Sierra, including local Native Americans, the Donner Party, and builders of the transcontinental railroad. Visitors can expect to spend about one hour exploring exhibits. Postcards, posters, maps, and books about the human and natural history of the area are for sale in the Visitor Center. Parking costs $10 per vehicle for the day.
Another great coffee shop in the area!
Our favorite coffee shop around, there are a few locations around Truckee and Reno.
Simple Mexican counter service dishing rotisserie chicken, tacos, burritos & tostadas.
One of our favorite nicer restaurants in Truckee, and the location for our rehearsal dinner.
Wonderful ice cream!
Easy place for burgers and shakes.
Lake Tahoe is a beautiful lake 25 minutes from Palisades Tahoe. In June, there are a plethora of hikes, beaches, and restaurants to explore. Check out the website to learn more.
This park has one of the most beautiful beaches around Lake Tahoe, with some of the clearest water you will ever see. Parking fills up fast during the summer, so taking the bus in from Incline Village or accessing via the 3-mile paved East Shore Trail is recommended.
The Rubicon Trail at DL Bliss State Park is a wonderful trail that runs along the shore of Lake Tahoe. You can connect it down to Emerald Bay for a longer hike if one desires.
