Audrey: I was in my third year of law school at UW Madison. During a particularly brutal study session for our tax exam, my friends and I decided to book a trip to Ireland for our Spring Break. Ulysse: I was working for Exotec, a French robotics company. We were going to present our robots at a tradeshow in Chicago and I needed to be there to ensure their smooth deployment. I had also decided to stay a little longer in the US afterward and do my very first weeklong trek in a national park, which I was very excited about. Audrey: My friends and I were cheap students, and had just spent a week together so we did not pay in order to sit next to each other or select our seats on the flight back from Dublin to the States. I was wearing my standard flight attire of a sweatshirt and sweatpants with messy hair. There was only one seat next to me, and as the plane filled up and no one sat down, I was extremely hopeful that I would be able to lie down and sleep during the flight. Ulysse: I had flown from Paris to Dublin the day before. I was supposed to catch a second flight to Chicago the same day but my first flight departed late and I missed my connection. As there were no more flights to Chicago that day, I was placed on the first flight the following morning and spent the night in Dublin. I took this opportunity to go out and see if Guinness really tastes better in Ireland (it does) and if Irish people are as friendly as they say (they are, maybe a little too much), but then woke up late the next day (perhaps due to my little hangover) and ended up being the last person to board the plane. Audrey: I was a little annoyed when I realized that the last man to board the plane was headed for the empty seat next to me. I said a brief hello and then popped my airpods in, disgruntled that he had ruined my dreams of sleeping on the flight. I proceeded to watch a movie and read part of a book. Ulysse: I was walking down the aisle when I saw the woman I would be sitting next to. She must have figured out I was heading for the seat next to hers because she stood up before I even got to her row. I thought she was very pretty, with her round and wide open blue eyes giving her a charming and confused look. We exchanged a few words but then didn’t talk much for the first few hours. It’s only when lunch arrived that we really started to chat. She told me she was American and had figured out from my accent that I was French. She tried to speak French to me, but snob as I am, I kept answering in English. Audrey: It turned out that the man sitting next to me was far more interesting than I anticipated. We spoke on and off about our work, our hobbies, our friends and our future projects. At the end of the flight I asked him for his Instagram, so I could follow along as he built his robots and hiked his mountains. He responded with a smooth “I don’t have Instagram, but you can have my number.” I took it, thinking that nothing would come of it. We disembarked the flight, me returning to my friends and him going on his way. While I thought that I wouldn’t use his number, I, of course, texted him the very next day. We proceeded to exchange messages, increasing in number and length every day after. Ulysse: I had not expected to have such a lovely encounter on the plane, and when we landed I was torn between the excitement of it and the sadness that it was over. I was so happy when I received a text from her the next day, and the subsequent recommendations of places to visit while I was in Chicago. After the tradeshow was over and I started my hike, I had a lot more free time and the conversation became increasingly intense. Talking to her was easy and felt good, and I grew attached to her. Despite all the complications of us living in different continents, soon enough I mentioned wanting to see her again. Ulysse: A few weeks after I went back to France, we started to regularly call and Audrey invited me to come to the US for a tour of the Midwest. So ten weeks from the day we met, I was once again on a flight to Chicago, but this time to continue north. We spent ten days together, exploring Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago. I met Audrey’s family and friends, but most importantly we got to really meet each other. Audrey: I had the summer off in between graduating law school and starting my job at the firm and we realized that it would be a perfect opportunity to spend more time together. My mother, grandmother and I were traveling to France at the end of July and I decided to stay in Europe for another month to see if there was something more to this new relationship. So we explored Lille, where Ulysse was working and living at the time, and went on many weekend and weeklong trips. We cycled to Belgium to eat fries and waffles, we took the Eurostar to see the Royal Ballet perform in London and I met his family at their ancestral home in La Chapelle. We also hiked the French Alps where I met the cows that make my beloved alpine cheese, and where we told each other we loved each other for the first time. Ulysse: After falling in love in Europe, we knew this relationship had become serious. We kept flying back and forth between our two countries, seeing each other for a couple weeks every two months. We kept doing this for a year, before I left my company in France to try and find a job overseas. The gap wasn’t completely closed as the job I eventually found was in Toronto, Canada, but it allowed us to spend even more time together. Another year passed, where our relationship grew even stronger, and we ultimately decided to close the gap for good this time. So I bought a ring, knelt while the sun was setting on the most idyllic beach of Lake Michigan, and asked to the same blue eyes I had met on a plane a couple years ago: “Will you marry me?”

Audrey : J’étais en troisième année de droit à l’UW Madison, dans le Wisconsin. Durant une session de révisions particulièrement brutale, mes amies et moi avons décidé de réserver un voyage en Irlande pour les vacances de printemps. Ulysse : Je travaillais pour Exotec, une boîte française de robotique. Nous devions présenter nos robots lors d’un salon à Chicago, et je devais être présent pour assurer leur déploiement. J’avais également décidé de profiter de l'occasion pour rester un peu plus longtemps aux États-Unis et faire ma toute première randonnée d’une semaine dans un parc national. Audrey : En tant qu'étudiantes fauchées, et après avoir passé une semaine ensemble, nous n’avions pas payé pour choisir nos sièges ou être assises côte à côte sur le vol retour de Dublin vers les États-Unis. Je portais ma tenue habituelle pour l’avion : un sweat-shirt, un pantalon de jogging et les cheveux en bataille. Il ne restait qu’un seul siège à côté de moi, et à mesure que l’avion se remplissait sans que personne ne s’y installe, j’espérais de tout cœur pouvoir m’allonger et dormir pendant le vol. Ulysse : J’avais pris un vol de Paris à Dublin la veille. Je devais ensuite prendre un second vol pour Chicago le même jour, mais comme mon premier avion était parti en retard, j’ai manqué ma correspondance. Comme il n’y avait plus de vol pour Chicago ce jour-là, on m’a placé sur le premier vol du lendemain matin, et j’ai passé la nuit à Dublin. J’en ai profité pour sortir et vérifier si la Guinness avait vraiment meilleur goût en Irlande (c’est vrai), et si les Irlandais étaient aussi sympathiques qu’on le dit (ils le sont, peut-être un peu trop). Mais je me suis réveillé en retard le lendemain (peut-être à cause d’une petite gueule de bois) et j’ai fini par être le dernier passager à embarquer dans l’avion. Audrey : J’étais furieuse quand j’ai compris que le dernier homme à monter dans l’avion se dirigeait vers le siège vide à côté de moi. En temps normal, j’aurais dit bonjour à mon voisin, mais cette fois, j’ai simplement mis mes AirPods et je l’ai ignoré, contrariée qu’il ait ruiné mon espoir de dormir pendant le vol. J’ai donc regardé un film et lu une partie d’un livre. Ulysse : En remontant l’allée, j’ai aperçu la femme à côté de qui j’allais m’asseoir. Elle a dû comprendre que je me dirigeais vers ce siège, car elle s’est levée avant même que j’arrive à son niveau. Je l’ai trouvée très jolie, avec ses grands yeux bleus ronds et ouverts, lui donnant un air à la fois charmant et un peu perdu. Nous avons échangé quelques mots, puis nous n’avons pas beaucoup parlé pendant les premières heures. Ce n’est qu’au moment du déjeuner que nous avons vraiment commencé à discuter. Elle m’a dit qu’elle était Américaine et avait deviné, à mon accent, que j’étais Français. Elle a essayé de me parler en français, mais, snob que je suis, je continuais à lui répondre en anglais. Audrey : Il s’est avéré que l’homme assis à côté de moi était bien plus intéressant que je ne l’avais imaginé. Nous avons discuté de nos jobs respectifs, de nos passe-temps, de nos amis et de nos projets d’avenir. À la fin du vol, je lui ai demandé son Instagram, pour pouvoir suivre ses aventures tandis qu'il construirait ses robots ou gravirait ses montagnes. Il m’a répondu élégamment : « Je n’ai pas Instagram, mais tu peux prendre mon numéro. » Je l’ai pris, bien qu'imaginant qu'il ne me servirait pas. Nous avons quitté l’avion, moi retrouvant mes amies et lui poursuivant sa route. Bien que je pensais ne jamais utiliser son numéro, je lui ai, bien sûr, envoyé un message dès le lendemain. Nous avons continué à échanger, nos messages devenant chaque jour plus nombreux et plus longs. Ulysse : Je ne m’attendais pas à faire une si belle rencontre dans un avion, et à l’atterrissage j’étais partagé entre l’excitation de cette rencontre et la tristesse qu’elle soit déjà terminée. J’étais donc ravi de recevoir un message d’elle le lendemain, accompagné de recommandations de lieux à visiter pendant mon séjour à Chicago. Après le salon, lorsque j’ai commencé ma randonnée, j’avais beaucoup plus de temps libre, et notre conversation est devenue de plus en plus intense. Parler avec elle était c'était simple et me faisais me sentir bien, et j'ai commencé 0 m'attacher à elle. Malgré toutes les complications et la distance entre nos continents respectifs, j’ai rapidement commencé à évoquer l’envie de la revoir. Ulysse : Quelques semaines après mon retour en France, nous avons commencé à nous appeler régulièrement, et Audrey m’a invité à venir aux États-Unis pour me faire visiter son Midwest natal. Ainsi, dix semaines après notre rencontre, je reprenais un vol pour Chicago — mais cette fois, pour continuer plus loin vers le nord. Nous avons passé dix jours ensemble, explorant Milwaukee, Madison et Chicago. J’ai rencontré la famille et les amis d’Audrey, mais surtout, nous avons vraiment appris à nous connaître. Audrey : Entre la fin de mes études de droit et le début de mon premier travail, mon été était complètement libre et nous avons réalisé que c’était l’occasion parfaite de passer plus de temps ensemble. Ma mère, ma grand-mère et moi devions voyager en France fin juillet, et j’ai décidé de rester en Europe un mois de plus pour voir ce que cette nouvelle relation pouvait donner. Nous avons donc exploré Lille, où Ulysse vivait et travaillait à l’époque, et avons fait de nombreux voyages d’un week-end ou d’une semaine. Nous avons fait du vélo jusqu’en Belgique pour manger des frites et des gaufres, pris l’Eurostar pour voir le Royal Ballet à Londres, et j’ai rencontré sa famille dans leur maison ancestrale à La Chapelle. Nous avons aussi randonné dans les Alpes françaises, où j’ai rencontré les vaches qui produisent ce fromage que j'aime tant. C'est également là que nous nous sommes dit « je t’aime » pour la première fois. Ulysse : Après ce mois en amoureux en Europe, nous savions que cette relation était devenue quelque chose de sérieux. Nous avons continué à nous voir, prenant l’avion l’un vers l’autre tous les deux mois pour passer quelques semaines ensemble à chaque fois. Nous avons tenu ainsi pendant un an, avant que je ne décide de quitter mon job en France pour tenter d'en trouver un à l’étranger. L’écart n’était pas complètement comblé puisque celui que j'ai finalement trouvé était à Toronto, au Canada, mais cela nous a permis de passer encore plus de temps ensemble. Une nouvelle année s’est écoulée, pendant laquelle notre relation s’est encore renforcée, et nous avons finalement décidé de combler définitivement la distance. Alors j’ai acheté une bague, mis un genou à terre tandis que le soleil se couche sur la plus romantique des plages du lac Michigan, et j’ai demandé aux mêmes yeux bleus que j’avais rencontrés dans un avion quelques années plus tôt :« Will you marry me? »

The first weekend of Summerfest coincides with our wedding date, so Milwaukee hotels are more expensive than usual. The Plaza and the Marriott are both downtown, and the Springhill Suites is a fifteen minute drive from the venue. The beauty of Milwaukee is that nothing is more than a fifteen minute drive away, so please feel free to stay where ever is most convenient for you.

Hotels

The Plaza Hotel is a historic hotel just one block from the wedding venue. Our hotel block releases half of the unreserved rooms on April 21, and the rest on May 21, so please book early. You may adjust your stay length when reserving—just mention our names so you're added to the wedding block.

The Courtyard is a five minute drive from the wedding venue and is in the heart of downtown Milwaukee. It is also connected to <a href="https://3rdstmarkethall.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">3rd St. Market Hall</a>, a food hall that also has bars and games. The length of stay cannot be adjusted at the Marriott. Please mention our names to be added to the wedding block.

Travel

Milwaukee is serviced by General Mitchell International Airport, conveniently about fifteen minutes south of downtown.

Chicago's O'Hare airport is a big hour away from downtown Milwaukee and usually has cheaper flight options.

🇺🇸 Milwaukee is home to one of the world's largest music festivals, the first weekend of which is occurring during the weekend of the wedding. It is the reason hotels may be more expensive, but maybe one of your favorite artists is performing while you're in town! 🇫🇷 Milwaukee accueille chaque année l'un des plus gros festivals de musique au monde, et il démarre le week-end du mariage. C'est la raison pour laquelle les hôtels sont plus cher que d'ordinaire, mais jetez-y un coup d’œil car il se peut que votre artiste préféré performe lors de votre séjour.

🇺🇸 Milwaukee's Third Ward is a historic neighborhood within walking distance of Audrey's office. It is filled with galleries, shops and restaurants and is right on the Milwaukee River. A few of our favorite restaurants are Onesto, DanDan, and Bavette, and we love having a beer and fries on Cafe Benelux's roof. 🇫🇷 Le Third Ward est le quartier historique de Milwaukee, facilement accessible à pied. On y trouve plein de galleries, des magasins et des restaurants, et il est à deux pas du lac et de la rivière de Milwaukee. 🇺🇸 Two hours from Milwaukee, Wisconsin Dells is known as the "Waterpark Capital of the World"&nbsp;because it has the largest concentration of waterparks in the world and is home to America's largest outdoor waterpark, Noah's Ark. 🇫🇷 A deux heures de route de Milwaukee, Wisconsin Dells est considéré comme la capitale mondiale des parcs aquatiques et possède la plus grande concentration de parcs au monde. What is the dress code?

Our dress code is Garden Party. Think festive, colorful spring attire. Women: Midi or longer dresses in bright colors, pastels, or florals are perfect. There is no grass, so choose whatever shoes you love. Men: Suits are encouraged. Lighter seasonal colors are great, but classic darker suits are equally welcome.

What is the parking situation?

There is street parking available around The Fitzgerald. That said, we’ll be hosting an open bar and want everyone to celebrate safely, so we strongly encourage using a rideshare service. One of our recommended hotels is within walking distance of the venue, which makes transportation especially easy.

May I bring a plus-one?

We would like to keep our day more intimate. We ask that you do not bring a plus-one unless they are listed on the invitation. We appreciate your thoughtfulness.

May I bring my children?

We truly adore your little ones, and your love and support means the world to us. For this special day, we are hoping to keep things small and mostly adult-focused. We kindly ask that only children of our immediate families/those listed on the invitation attend. Thank you so much for understanding.
