There are several hiking trails within Missoula and trailheads can be found with a quick google search. Here are a few we recommend.
Waterworks: Great views of Missoula, 3.5 mi out-and-back, 700 ft of elev.gain
McClay Flats: A flat and pretty nature walk by the Bitterroot river, 1.7 mi loop, 13 ft of elev. gain
The "M" Trail: A classic, must-do Missoula hike with views over the university, 1.2 mi out-and-back, 600 ft of elev. gain
Others include: Mount Jumbo, Blue Mountain recreation area, Kim William riverfront trail, Pattee Canyon, Barmeyer trail.
Walk the Hip Strip and get some of the best ice cream there is in western Montana! While you're at it, consider getting a drink at Kettlehouse brewery or stopping in at Gild for their arcade!
Glacier NP is about 3 hours from Missoula. If planning on visiting the park, just know that they require permits to be reserved months in advance. The other option is to arrive at the park entrance before 6 a.m. or after 3 p.m. Expect traffic as it will be peak season.
Interested in Glacier-like views without the traffic? Consider driving an hour north to the Bison range for views of the Mission mountains and majestic North American Bison.
Check out the Garden of 1,000 Buddhas only 30 minutes north of Missoula. We've visited the Buddha gardens numerous times and always find it incredibly peaceful.
