Brent and Lauren met while working at Midtown Foods in Winona, Minnesota. Lauren was going to school at Winona State University, while Brent was taking a break from school and moved back home. Brent asked Lauren out in the summer of 2010, but Lauren told him no so that she could hang out with her friends. It was only once school started back up when she was talking to one of their good friends Kendra, who suggested she start hanging out with Brent. Weeks of flirting passed as Brent would come and help out at Lauren's checkout line and bag all of her customers groceries and they would text each other outside of work. Finally, Lauren suggested that they hang out one night, and they went and played darts and drank Captain & Cokes at the local bar, Zaza's. She got the nerve to finally ask him to be her boyfriend the next night, and they have been inseparable ever since.

In July 2015, Brent and Lauren went up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota for a 5 day, 4 night camping excursion. Lauren had suspicions that something was going to happen, but by the last full day of their trip, had really given up hope. The morning of their last full day, Brent was being very affectionate (which as most everyone knows, is not very like Brent) but Lauren didn't think anything of it. Brent suggested that they go fishing, so Lauren went and started getting everything to put in the canoe. Brent told Lauren that she was "his biggest catch", when Lauren remembered that she had to go get the lifejackets off the clothesline. When she came back, Brent told that "I have loved every minute of the adventure we have been on, but I'd like it if you went on a bigger adventure with me," and finally got down on one knee. Lauren of course, started crying and fell to her knees and said yes.

Then they went fishing.
