It’s the morning of December 25, 2020. We stand in front of the sparkling lights of the Christmas tree, wearing festive sweaters and sipping mimosas as we alternate opening our gifts for each other. Our three cats play amidst the pieces of wrapping paper all over the floor. Our home feels festive and cozy and filled with love. Despite the rain, it feels like a perfect first Christmas together. Near the end of our gift exchange, Brendan hands me a long box wrapped in blue and white paper. It’s lighter than it looks. I rip off the paper and open it, my chest tightening. Time seems to slow down. There is another small, square wrapped package inside. I don’t dare to dream what is inside, rationalizing that there’s no way he would be proposing now - so soon and so unexpectedly. Just yesterday I had told my mom that I didn’t think we’d be engaged for another few years. Nevertheless, my heart races as I unwrap the small, square package. It’s a black box. Tears threaten. This can’t be what it seems. It must be a promise ring. He mentioned promise rings the other day. Or maybe it’s a pair of earrings? I grip the box and start to open it, bracing myself. As the lid opens up, I catch a brief glimpse of sparkle before Brendan is suddenly on one knee. “Brie, will you marry me?” The tears begin to fall. This can’t be real. Even though he is there on his knee and I’m clutching a beautiful, oval diamond ring, it’s too much of a shock. I stare from the ring in my hand and back to Brendan. Is this a prank? “Really babe?!” I question. Tears keep falling. “Yes” he says, smiling. “Seriously?!” I grab his face and start kissing him through my tears. “Yes babe!” A part of my brain still can’t believe it. I continue to cry and clutch his face, kissing him. A feeling of immense happiness balloons inside me. “Really?! This is real?!” “Yes babe!” He laughs, exasperated, and says “you still haven’t given me an answer!” The light finally turns on in my brain. “Yes!!” I say as I crush my lips to his, my tears wetting both of our faces. Brendan rises and I notice that he has shed a few tears of his own. Love and happiness swell. I look down at the beautiful ring, tears continuing to fall, and say, “okay, time to put it on me!!” I don’t ever stop crying. Or at least it feels that way. As we begin to let the world know that we are engaged, I occasionally look at Brendan and practically wiggle with excitement. I can’t wait to be Mrs. Montgomery. I know it will be a long engagement because of the COVID-19 pandemic and our finances, but I will cherish the time we spend as fiancé’s. Our friends and family are ecstatic for us. We receive over 200 likes and almost 100 comments of congratulations on our Facebook announcement. My mom calls me as soon as I tell her. Brendan’s Aunt Brenda calls us as well. My sister Danielle congratulates us in a post of her own. In the evening, Brendan’s dad picks us up and drives us to his apartment. There, Brendan’s step-mom Anna does a Ukrainian toast to honour our engagement, invoking health and love and mutual respect. As we sit around the table, chatting, laughing and eating Anna’s first and yet perfectly cooked turkey dinner, I feel grateful to have become a part of the Montgomery family. Later in bed, I tell Brendan that I can’t wait to be Mrs. Montgomery. He tells me that he already considers me to be his wife. He explains that proposing was an easy decision to make because he can’t imagine being with anyone else. I tell him that I never want to get divorced and that we must always talk through our problems together. He agrees. We snuggle and fall asleep, his hand clasped in mine and the faint light from the window illuminating the most beautiful ring a girl could ever hope for.

Our favorite restaurant. It is in high demand, so expect a wait (good news is you can order drinks while you wait in the lobby). Great food, with weekly specials.

Eat dinner at the Cheshire Cat Pub 

Ottawa has many great hiking locations but we highly recommend Mud Lake. It’s near the venue and teeming with wildlife! We have seen so many different animals here - many types of birds including a gorgeous female Coopers Hawk, woodland ducks, turkeys, chipmunks and squirrels, turtles, muskrats and herons. Parking is merely on the side of the road.

Go for a fall hike 

Located downtown Ottawa, Parliament Hill and Byward Market are within walking distance of each other. Lots of restaurants and shops. Don’t forget to take a stroll through Major’s Hill Park - it’s beautiful in the fall!
