Our Story

Just Friends to The Usserys!!

Picture of Just Friends to The Usserys!!

Brooke's Version:

It was March 2011, a couple days before Freshman year Spring Break, when I texted my good guy friend from high school Robert Sorrell. I told him that I needed him to find me a date to the Sigma Chi formal later the next month. All of my friends had dates and I knew if I didn't ask Robert to find me a random date then I wouldn't get to go. I vaguely remember him texting me back about a guy named Morgan that needed a date and also that he was going on Spring Break with our crew to Panama City the next week so I could meet him then! I didn't think anything of it and was just excited that I may have a shot at a fun weekend at a fraternity formal. (What a brat, huh?!)

Fast forward a couple days and myself with 5 girls, and what seemed like 25 boys, were in a condo on nasty Panama City Beach, Florida for our first Spring Break. Looking back now I have no idea how my parents let me go/ or even why I wanted to go because that is one GROSS place during Spring Break, but I sure am glad I was there because thats when I met my Morgan Lee! I remember getting introduced to him and casually talking and flirting a little, but I was there with my girlfriends and I was ready to party! I had no intention of hanging out with a boy all week/ much less falling in love with him! What most of you may not know if you don't know Morgan is that he's a persistent little fella and when he knows what he wants he is going to get it. I remember catching him looking at me several times, and he would always happen to be within an earshot the first night. I remember my friends pointing out that he always found a way to be right around me or he would always jump in our conversations and crack jokes with me.I didn't think anything of it, until he somehow managed to get my number and began texting me when he couldn't figure out a way to be with me while we were there. Morgan is a very funny guy and his dry sense of humor and ability to always make people laugh made me find myself wanting to hangout with him all the time too! I remember the first time one of his pledge brothers said something about us being connected at the hip and I thought "nuh uh! we are just friends"!

FRIEND ZONE: I thought that it would just be a Spring Break flirty thing, and maybe he would ask me to formal, but that would be it, kind of situation. We were very clear that we were just friends that enjoyed each others company. We both had recently been in relationships, so we were NOT "talking"/ dating, we were just friends. The more I talked and texted with Morgan the more I wanted to hangout with him and the more I realized that we were kind of "talking" despite our best efforts to not want a relationship. He ended up asking me to Row week date night which is before formal, and formal. Y'all I wish there was a better story, but we were the classic college couple that just hung out none stop, swore we were just going to be friends, everyone knew differently and just ended up falling for each other. By the time we decided to call it "official" no one even cared because they thought we already were.

Six years later.. here we are with 2 crazy dogs about to make this friendship official! If you've ever been around us before you know that we are very best friends. He can always make me laugh. He makes me calm down and not take life too seriously. We are competitive, always doing random things, and completely obsessed with our French Bulldogs. My mom once told me that I had "met my match" with Morgan. She says "he doesn't just do whatever you tell him to do and let you walk all over him." And she is right, he challenges me, encourages me, supports me, picks at me, aggravates me on purpose, but loves me unconditionally. He is patient with me, but will also let me know when he thinks I'm being crazy! Haha! He sees the good in everyone and makes me a better person every single day. I've never tried out this marriage thing before, but I think the qualities we have are going to make us pretty good teammates and set us up for a fun and adventurous life! I can't wait to marry him and be an Ussery finally!

Morgans Version:

Morgan (man of few words) says everything above is true BUT we first met in the courtyard at the Sigma Chi House, first semester. He also says he knows I knew his name because I yelled at him when he was going across the cross walk to class one day. I don't remember either of those. (Whoops!!) I think he is just trying to make me feel bad!!

Proposal Story

The Proposal

After dating for almost 6 years, I knew that Morgan was the one and that we would get married, but the only problem was that he lived 2.5 hours away and had for 2.5 years... If you know me then you know that I like to have a plan. Also if you know Morgan, then you know that he does NOT like to have a plan. (Opposites attract they say) So my plan was, Morgan would move to Little Rock at some point. We would live in the same city for at least 6 months dating just to make sure we knew how to live and be around each other in the "adult world" and then we would get engaged and married. When Morgan told me at the end of September that he had gotten a new job and was going to be moving to Little Rock in 2 weeks I couldn't be more excited! This meant we would date October through maybe March-ish and I was hoping he would propose in the Spring then I could have a Spring 2018 wedding!

Morgan clearly had another plan considering he moved in October and proposed on Thanksgiving a little over a month later!! I was SHOCKED! I'll get to the engagement itself but before I go on I have to explain the puppy situation too. Everyone knows Hank my french bulldog is the light of my life! He is my favorite little buddy and went with me EVERYWHERE! He was there for me during those long weeks I would have to spend away from Morgan when he lived in Fayetteville, El Dorado and then Osceola. We (Hank and I) would pack up every Friday and Sunday and travel to see Morgan or wait on him to come see us. We (Morgan and I) had always talked about getting another dog for Hank to have a little buddy, but it was all talk (or so I thought).I remember in college before I even got Hank there was a video that went around on Facebook of a boyfriend waking his girlfriend up with a french bulldog that had a ring on its collar. I showed it to Morgan jokingly ranting and raving about how perfect that would be if that could happen one day. I honestly did not think he was listening.. apparently he was!! Haha

Back to the engagement. It was Thanksgiving Day and Morgan was suppose to be at Mur's (my grandmothers) house at 12:30 sharp for lunch. At 12:45 he was still not there so I was starting to get sort of annoyed, but with family everywhere and the lunch still not being ready yet I figured it was ok. He FINALLY showed up around 1ish and all of the family was still running around the kitchen trying to finish getting lunch ready. When I say family I mean mom, dad, brother, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, great aunts and uncles, 6 dogs..yeah we have it all haha I couldn't really get to him to tell him hello and I was helping set the table anyways. I remember him calling my name and telling me to come here and when I looked at him his face was GHOST WHITE. He looked like he was about to yack everywhere. When I said what? He asked me to come over and give him a hug which was ultra weird to me. When I went to hug him his entire body was trembling. Before we even stopped hugging Morgan dropped straight down to one knee. (It was so fast my uncle thought he had fallen and went to help him up before he realized what he was doing) No one in the family knew except for my mom and dad because Morgan asked for my dads permission in late October. My mom didn't want to risk telling any of my family members and them acting weird so she didn't tell anyone! When Morgan said "Will you marry me?" The first thing I said was "What are you doing?!?!?!?" I was frozen in shock and all I could do was cry! The video my mom got of the proposal was after he had gotten off of his knee because he did it so fast when he got there that my mom wasn't ready. Mom told me later that he walked in and told her he thought he was going to have a panic attack or throw up.

I was still in shock and everyone was screaming and wanting to see my ring. I was shaking now and couldn't stop crying, but Morgan said that we needed to go outside because he had something else that he needed to give me in his truck. I don't know why but I thought it was like a gift from his parents or a necklace or really anything except a PUPPY! He told me to open his truck door and I remember telling him to just get it for me that Mur wanted to see my ring, but he insisted I open the door. When I did Jax's little head popped up and it scared me so bad I slammed the door shut and screamed OMG WHAT!? Morgan told me to open it back up that I probably scared him to death. Jax was teeny tiny and a little fiesty sucker. He growled and snapped at Hank the first time they met and I remember thinking "Oh lord I hope this works" Morgans Mom had been so sweet and taken care of Jax for a whole week before I got him. She took him to work, Walmart (hidden in a freezer bag HAHA), everywhere! I couldn't believe I hadn't figured his plan out! I just knew for sure that I would be able to figure out when he was going to propose because I am such an investigator but he did amazing on the ring, the proposal, and the dog!
