We met in Ann Arbor, MI, Jan. 2018 (thanks, Tinder!). 2.5 months later, Camila moved to Philly for a new job. Two years of long-distance took its toll, but in the end love prevailed when we got married in April 2020 - yes, back when COVID was at its peak. Our celebration consisted of 6 of our immediate family members, but it was special nonetheless. We did, however, promise to have a "proper" celebration once COVID blew over - hence, the big bash in Bogota!

ABOUT COLOMBIA: Colombia is a beautiful country and is internationally-recognized as one of the happiest countries in the world. It is also known for its delicious food and richness in nature and biodiversity. The capital of Colombia is Bogota, DC. Bogota is one of the biggest cities in Latin America, with a population of over 7 million people. The events of our wedding weekend will take place in Bogota, and the wedding ceremony and reception will be in an estate about 1-2 hours (27 miles) outside the city.

How is the weather in Bogota, Colombia? ﻿Bogota is located in the Andes mountains at a median height of 2600 m or 8600 ft above sea level. For this reason, even though Colombia is in the equator, the weather in Bogota is not tropical. Some may feel the effects of altitude sickness for the first few days. Temperature is consistently around highs of 66F and lows of 46F in Feb. (8-19 C). Expect somewhat cloudy weather, and occasional rain, but otherwise dry conditions. Most people wear pants with light sweaters and jackets.

What language is spoken in Colombia? Colombia is a Latin America country, where the official language is Spanish. You may encounter some people who speak English specially in the big cities, but it is not very common.

Is Colombia a safe country to visit? Like any large city, Bogota has its beautiful, safe areas, and other areas that are not so nice. Practice common sense. Consider not wearing flashy jewelry or clothing, and keeping your valuables with you at all times. Keep your valuable items in a safe space. As we say in Colombian slang " no dar papaya", which means be smart and do not call attention to yourself. In the travel tab of our website, you will find a list of some areas we recommend you check out that are safe and fun.

About Colombia

For those travelling from abroad, the best way to travel to Colombia, is to arrive to the Bogota airport, El Dorado. There are many flights from the US and Europe that offer a variety of airfare options. We recommend booking your flights a couple of months in advance to avoid high prices.As of 2024, Colombia has no COVID travel restrictions and no vaccination card or COVID test is needed to enter the country. You will, however, have to fill out a form 24 hours prior to arrival for migration purposes: https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/en We recommend taking a screenshot of the completed form because they'll ask for it in customs.

El Dorado - Bogotá International Airport (BOG)

We recommend that during your stay in Colombia you use either local Taxis or apps like Uber, "Cabify", "Didi" and "Taxis Libres". Taxis are relatively cheap. Most rides around the city will cost less than $10. While you might see many locals hailing a taxi down the street, it's better not to as a foreigner. We do not recommend that you rent a car in Bogota. Traffic in Bogota is hectic, and also there are some restrictions as "Pico y Placa" which limits the days and times you can use your rental in the city.

How to move around Bogota

We are recommending two hotels for your stay in Bogota based on location and comfort. Also, the W and NH - Royal Teleport hotels will be the pick-up/drop-off points if you plan on taking the transportation arranged by us to and from the wedding venue. The W Marriot is a 5 star hotel in the Usaquen area. The prices for a single or double room starts at ~$310/night.

The second hotel we are recommending is a 4 start hotel, NH Royal Teleport Bogota. It is located next to the W Marriot hotel in the Usaquen area. This hotel has single /double rooms starting at $130/night.

Travel

The Basilica of Monserrate is one of the most iconic landmarks in Bogota. It is located in the highest point in the city at 2,600 m or 8600 ft above sea level. At the top of Monserrate you will see a beautiful view of all the city. There are two options to go up and down the hill. Either you take the cable car or the funicular.

Museo del Oro is one of the most iconic and important museums in Colombia. It contains all the gold figurines from the indigenous civilization.Other museums worth checking out are Museo Nacional and Museo de Botero.

We recommend checking out Usaquen. Usaquen used to be a little town outside Bogota, but as the city grew it became another neighborhood.Here you can find a great variety of restaurants. It is also a great place for shopping Colombian handcrafts as bags, jewelry, etc. On weekends, the famous flea market takes place where artisans from all over the country come and sell their handcrafts.

We recommend that you also check out the restaurants in the area of Parque de la 93. Around this park you can find all types of cuisines, bars and shops.Zona T near Calle 85 also has also more options of restaurants and shops to check out. Calle 85 is famous in Bogota for its Nightlife and clubs.

There are tons of restaurants in Bogota that you can try and of all types of cuisines.General recommendations of chains restaurants all over the city are the following: Coffee shops: Juan Valdez and OMACrepes and Waffles: is a chain of restaurants where you can find breakfast, lunch, dinner and delicious desserts.Andres Carne de Res ( Express or in Calle 85): These restaurants offer Colombian food, we recommend you try it for lunch or dinner.Burgers: El Corral or H de Hamburguesa are good places to try if you are craving a burger.Beer: Bogota Beer Company or BBC is a typical beer pub where you can find Colombian beer.Bakery: Pan Pa'ya is a very typical bakery that has traditional pastries and breakfasts. There are many other good options in the city, this is just a quick guide if you are in rush for a bite!

Places to eat

Nails:For those who would like to get their mani's and pedi's done, we recommend Super Wow locations. The prices are significantly cheaper than in the US. You can download the app to find the nearest location and book appointments to get your nails done.Beauty Salons:There are tons of salons all over the city as well. If you are looking for a place to get your hair done we recommend the Vidal Beauty salons. You can also get all other type of beauty services here. If you are interested in more high end beauty salons we recommend Brulee and Praga salons. If there are any other type of services you might need during your stay ( i.e an emergency doctor or dentist, or SPA services), let us know and we can help you!

Nails and Beauty Salons

If you plan on staying a couple of days more in Colombia, we recommend that you check out Cartagena.To get here we recommend you take a flight, which is about 1.5hr from Bogota. Cartagena is a city located in the Caribbean, and is known as to be one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Colombia.It is a very historic city which still has some architecture from the Spanish Colony. Cartagena is also known for its beautiful islands and beaches. Make sure to visit the following at a minimum: 1) Ciudad Vieja (Old Town)2) Castillo de San Felipe (Saint Felipe's Fortress)3) Getsemani (famous hipster neighborhood)4) Nearby islands (Baru, Playa Blanca,Islas del Rosario among others)

Cartagena, Colombia

If there are other places you would like to explore in Colombia we have a couple of recommendations. Medellin, San Andres Islands, Eje Cafetero, and Tayrona National Park are other places that we recommend checking out if you are interested in travelling around Colombia. Colombia is a very beautiful and diverse country and has many options for different activities!
