Our Story

Picture of Our Story

Caroline and Ian met in the summer of 2020—a crazy time for the world, but a "crazy-in-love" summer for them. A year before that, Ian had moved to Salt Lake City from the East Coast after spending six years in his surgical residency program. He had been matched with the University of Utah for the final two years of his long training to become a vascular surgeon. During his fellowship, Ian spent countless hours in the operating room with one of the most notorious vascular surgeons in the state. After performing life-saving surgeries—whether repairing aortas or performing limb-saving bypasses—he would drop his very sick patients off at the cardiovascular intensive care unit, where Caroline was a nurse.

Caroline remembers noticing Ian back then, thinking, "Who's this cute, grumpy vascular surgery fellow?" But at the time, her focus was on her 12-hour night shifts, working tirelessly to stabilize his patients. A year passed with little more than a few grunts from Ian and fleeting glances from Caroline.

Then, the stars aligned. Caroline was scrolling through Bumble when she spotted a handsome face and strong jawline that stopped her in her tracks. “Wait… that’s the cute, grumpy vascular surgery fellow from work!” she thought. She decided to look past his grumpy reputation and swiped 'yes'—and to her surprise, it was an immediate match! Turns out, Ian had already noticed her profile and was equally intrigued (despite not recognizing her from work—don’t worry, we’ll forgive him for that!).

Their first date was effortless, and before long, they couldn’t get enough of each other. The last four years have been filled with incredible milestones. Ian graduated from his fellowship and was hired by a hospital just north of Salt Lake City. They moved in together, and soon after, Caroline was accepted into a Doctor of Nursing Practice program, starting her journey to become a nurse practitioner.

Since then, they’ve built a life and a home together, nestled deep in the Wasatch Mountains. Along the way, they adopted a cat named Zuzu, a dog named Jackson, and, eventually, a fat cat named John Henry. After three amazing years, career changes, graduate school, a home, and a growing critter family, Ian took Caroline up into a beautiful mountain meadow behind their home, covered in fresh snow, on December 1st, 2023, and asked her to marry him. She said YES!

Now, we can’t wait to celebrate this next chapter with all of you as they tie the knot on their special day.
