Hatcher Pass is a local favorite playground for various activities. A scenic drive, a historic gold mine, and breathtaking views. You can find a complete list of trails and activities at the link below, here are our top 3 recommendations:
Independence Mine- the remains of a gold mine that was active in the years leading up to WWII. Many of the structures, mineshafts, and artifacts are still present with easy access to explore the area.
Summit Lake/April Bowl- At the top of the pass is Summit Lake. There is a parking lot and walking trail so it is easily accessible. To get further off the road, there is also the trailhead for April Bowl at the same parking lot. It's a steep climb but very short and leads to a beautiful lake and views of the valley.
Reed Lakes- One of the highest recommended hikes in Alaska! This 4-mile hike will lead you along the flat valley floor then climb into hanging valleys and cross boulder fields to lead to the stunning Lower Reed Lake. Those wanting to see more can follow the trail an extra mile along the waterfall and creek to Upper Reed Lake at the base of Lynx Peak.
A family favorite, the Musk-Ox Farm offers walking tours and interactions with the arctic mammal that's been around since the Ice Age!
Fall at the Farm! You'll get the chance to feed and interact with their friendly animals including reindeer, highland cattle, and alpacas! You'll also visit Rocky Mountain Elk, Tibetan Yaks, bunnies, and more!
A beautiful fjord-like lake, about a 50-minute drive from Wasilla. It's a great spot for camping, lakeside picnics, and various activities. There is a lakeside trail that travels along the water's edge as well as a trail that heads up the mountain for stunning views. There are also rentals for kayaks and bikes.
The rental and guide company at Eklutna Lake.
"Flightseeing"-a unique way to explore Alaska's wilderness (also where the bride was working when she and the groom met!). There is a variety of options available from simple flightseeing tours to landings on glaciers and alpine ridges.
