It was cold the night we met. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has spent time in Kirksville, as you're all well aware of the bitter winters. I decided to wear a cheetah print fur coat to the party that night, as it 1) was a bold fashion statement and 2) kept me warm from the January chill.

I didn't know many people at the pre-party. I'd practically begged a friend of mine to organize this so I had a chance to meet some of the Sig Ep's before our mixer started later that evening-- despite being in my second year of college, I hadn't made a ton of friends outside of Sigma Kappa.

Fortunately, I recognized someone who walked in: Scotty Williams, who had been in my Public Speaking class the semester prior. I made a b-line to him because I was desperate for at least one familiar face. But as I said hi, I noticed that the guy Scotty was with was wearing a Boston Celtics jersey (no sleeves, by the way). I asked him if he was a fan and told him how I'd seen the Celtics play in Boston a few weeks prior while in New England for Christmas. He smiled and told me that he was, before asking me which sports I followed. Within that 10 minute conversation, I rattled off everything I knew about sports, desperately hoping it would impress him.

And I guess it did because a few months later, he asked me to be his girlfriend... and four years after that, he asked me to be his wife.

The night that we met started out like most weekend nights. I was hanging out at the chapter house before going out. We had a mixer with Sigma Kappa, and Scott told me that some people were going over to a pre-party with some of the girls beforehand. That sounded fun to me, so off we went.

I recognized a few people there, but not everyone. Soon after walking in, this girl wearing a fun cheetah print jacket came over and started talking to me. I thought she was really cute, and she even impressed me by talking about the Celtics and how she recently went to a game (I was wearing a Celtics jersey). I could tell this girl was very smart, and all I wanted to do was keep talking to her all night, which I did. The talking continued, and a few months later I asked her to officially be my girlfriend.

That was the best decision I ever made, as four years later I asked her to marry me, making me the luckiest and happiest man in the world.
