Our Wedding

Fifty-five years ago, in a quiet neighborhood shaded by old trees and filled with the scent of blooming flowers, my grandmother, Mrs. Thirlene Holt, noticed a new family moving into a house just a few doors down. Curious and kind-hearted as ever, she didn’t hesitate—she walked right up and introduced herself. That day, she met Claire Swicegood.Claire was part of a small, growing family—she had three little ones and another on the way. Something about her gentle presence and warm smile must’ve spoken to my grandmother, because from that very moment, a beautiful friendship began to blossom. My grandmother had three children of her own, all around the same ages as Claire’s. She also had a deep love for cooking—especially when it meant feeding others. She believed food was one of the purest forms of love. When she noticed that Claire, expecting her fourth child, was on the thinner side—not unhealthy, just “too skinny” in that affectionate, grandmotherly way—she made it her mission to “fatten her up” with homemade biscuits, soul food, and love. The kind of love that fills your heart before it even fills your belly. What started as a simple neighborly gesture turned into a lifelong friendship—one woven together through shared laughter, tears, beach trips, cruises, late-night talks, and even shifts together at the flower shop my grandmother owned. It was more than just companionship; it was the type of bond that feels like fate, the kind you only come across once in a lifetime. And it didn’t end with them.Their love, their connection, passed down through generations. Claire’s & Thirlene’s children were all close in age. They grew up more like siblings than friends. All of the children—hers, theirs—became woven into each other’s lives. They shared holidays, birthdays, scraped knees, and inside jokes. Even as they became adults, had babies of their own, and life grew busier, the closeness remained. My mother used to babysit Wendy’s children, and she also looked after Christina, who would later become my babysitter. Over the years, the names and faces changed and multiplied, but at the heart of it all remained the same enduring bond—the friendship that began between two women, united by open hearts and warm kitchens. If I tried to trace every thread of this connection, every memory, every laugh and every tear, we’d be here for days—watching the sun set and our hair turn gray. But what matters most is this: if it weren’t for those two extraordinary women, Caden and I wouldn’t just not be here in the literal sense—we wouldn’t feel the sense of home, history, and love that we do now. Because of them, our families didn’t just grow up together. We became one family. So how cool is it, really, that after all these years, all this love, all this shared life… our generations of friendship are now, officially and beautifully, family? Some stories are written in books. Ours was written in biscuits, beach trips, flower petals, and unconditional love.

A Friendship That Became Family

Even though our families were incredibly close, Caden and I couldn’t stand each other as kids. It was one of those classic love-hate dynamics—except back then, there was no love, just pure annoyance. During the summers, when his mom babysat me, we basically did everything we could to avoid each other. I’d walk outside to swim in the pool, and without fail, he’d head straight inside. It was like we couldn’t exist in the same space for more than five minutes without driving each other crazy. And when we did play together, it was chaos. He had this charming little habit of stealing the heads off my Barbies—either destroying them completely or launching them onto the roof of his house, where they remained forever decapitated like fallen toy soldiers. That ridiculous frenemy routine went on for years, until we were about 11. That’s when things... started to change. Slowly, but noticeably. The last time I saw Caden before everything shifted for good was during a family trip to my mountain house in Fleetwood, North Carolina. Both of our families were there, just like old times. Except something was different. Caden was different. He wouldn’t leave me alone, but not in the annoying, Barbie-destroying kind of way. I’d go out on the porch to swing, and within minutes, he’d be there too, striking up a conversation. And he was actually being nice. Like, genuinely nice. He was kind, thoughtful, even a little protective. For the first time, he was acting like a little gentleman. And honestly, it caught me off guard—especially because that trip also happened to be when I got my period for the first time. I was overwhelmed and embarrassed, but when he noticed something was off, he didn’t tease me or act weird. Instead, he asked if I needed chocolate or anything to make me feel better. Eleven-year-old Caden, the same boy who used to torment me, suddenly becoming this sweet, considerate version of himself? It was strange... but in a way that made my heart soften, just a little.Unfortunately, I had to leave early due to some things going on back home. We said goodbye, and just like that, years passed. Life moved on.Fast forward to my senior year of high school. I had just gotten out of my very first (and very short) relationship—it barely lasted a week and left me feeling confused more than anything. Then, out of nowhere, I got a text from my sister. It said, “Hey, don’t be mad at me, but I gave some random guy your number.”Panic. Full panic. My sister has questionable taste in men, so naturally, I braced myself for the worst. “Who did you give it to?” I texted her, trying not to freak out. She replied, “Oh, just an old friend.” And then she sent me a picture. It was Caden.I recognized him instantly. His face hadn’t changed all that much, but something about him seemed more mature, more grounded. I didn’t even hesitate—I texted him right away. And from that moment on... the rest is history.

The Story Before I do

It all started just after New Year's, a couple of days after I first texted Caden. Somehow, from the moment we reconnected, it just clicked—like we'd been holding a conversation on pause for six years. I was eager to see him again, so naturally, I begged my sister to make it happen. But Caden had egg roll duty. Now, this wasn't your average family cooking session. His mom and her friends are basically egg roll royalty. When they make egg rolls, they make egg rolls—hundreds of them, like a small army of crispy golden love wrapped in cabbage and magic. And on this fateful day, Caden was elbow-deep in wrappers and filling.Still, he kept texting me, saying how badly he wanted to see me—even if it had been more than half a decade since we’d laid eyes on each other. My sister could sense something was sparking, so she texted Christina (Caden’s mom), asking if we could stop by.Christina agreed with one condition:“Yes, but Cayla can’t distract Caden from rolling. We’ve got a LOT to wrap.”I was equal parts excited and absolutely terrified. When we arrived, I walked through the door and locked eyes with this tall, grown-up version of the kid I used to know. Caden wasn’t just taller—he was… hot. I panicked. He panicked. We exchanged the world’s most awkward side hug, and then just sort of stared at each other like confused meerkats.Thankfully, my sister swooped in to save the day with,“Hey Caden, why don’t you show Cayla your room? Didn’t you just redo the floors?”So off we went. We sat near his computer, trying our best to pretend we weren’t wildly nervous. Slowly, we began to open up. Our knees touched.CUE SPARKS.To this day, Caden says that moment—our knees brushing—was when he knew he loved me. I told him he was insane… but also, same.Caught in the moment, I leaned in and kissed him. Just a quick peck. And right then, my sister walked in. Classic sitcom timing. We were mortified. She was amused. Then she left us alone with our red cheeks and goofy grins. That’s when Caden jumped up and said,“Wanna go see the new Spider-Man?”“Yes,” I replied. And then, totally impulsive but somehow totally right, I blurted out,“This might sound crazy, but… do you wanna skip all the games and just be my boyfriend?”He said yes. He kissed me again. And just like that—at 12:30 AM, on January 2, 2022—our friendship became something so much more. Now, every year (when our wallets allow), we roll egg rolls to celebrate the day our knees touched and our lives changed.
