We met while we were both in college attending SUNY Plattsburgh, where it took a few years for us to find each other. We met through mutual friends during our junior year of college. We were both surprised how quickly we felt like we had known each other for years. Christian asked Emily out in March of 2013, and we have been together ever since. Things took off quickly, we both had met each other's family within a matter of a few months. We both had a feeling that this was something that was going to last far longer than our days at Plattsburgh. It didn't take long for us to find out about each other's love of sports, especially our beloved NFL teams- Christian's team being the NY Giants, Emily's team being the Pittsburgh Steelers. Luckily we both loved Syracuse basketball and were able to move past this initial difference in opinion!
Christian has always known how to make Emily laugh and see the good in everything. Emily has always tried help Christian try new things, including watching Manchester United, a strong love for coffee, and snowboarding. We always seemed to find new ways to enjoy being together, whether its checking out new breweries ,heading to the Adirondacks, or hitting the road to see one of our beloved football teams play. It is crazy to think that this all "started with a beer", but six years later we can't imagine our lives any other way.
Our proposal story is one of our favorites to tell. During Christmas vacation of 2017, we started to discuss the idea of taking a trip to Ireland during spring break. Emily had to been to Ireland before and still had good friends living in England. It didn't take long for us to jump on some cheap flights and start planning the trip of a lifetime. Emily had no clue she would be getting an unforgettable proposal when she dove into planning and mapping out the trip . Christian had told his family he had planned to propose this year, he also told Emily's best friend, Sarah, when he decided he was going to buy the ring. The week before we left, Christian suggested we go to Watertown for the night to see my parents. He mustered up the courage at breakfast Sunday morning to ask Emily's Father, Joel, permission. It is a true miracle that no one spilled the beans before we left for our trip!
We left right after school to head to the airport on the Friday of spring break to fly to our first destination- Edinburgh, Scotland. Christian had originally planned to propose at the end of the trip during our trip to the beautiful Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. But upon arriving to the picturesque coastal town of Leven, Scotland on the first day of our trip, Christian casually tucked the ring in his pocket while we walked into town with our bed and breakfast hosts to the local soccer pub. We were sleep deprived, hungry, and a few pints in while watching our favorite soccer team from England- Manchester United . As we were leaving, Christian completely surprised Emily when he spun her around and got down in one knee outside the Den Inn pub in Leven, Scotland.
Once the pub got wind of it, they pulled us back in for many celebratory drinks! One of our favorite lines was “Two Americans engaged in the pub today!!!! My wife is never going to believe this!!!” We celebrated with them like family and we will never forget our time in Leven, Scotland. We went back to our room at to begin calling all of out family and friends back home. The following day we went to the famous St. Andrew's golf course, a dream of Christian's, and continued to celebrate. Our hosts, Ant & Charlotte, even brought champagne to our rooms to cheers our engagement with us! The Forth Bay Guest House in Leven will always be such a special spot for us to remember our engagement. We spent the rest of our trip celebrating with everyone we met from Leven, Scotland, to Leeds, England, to Dublin, Ireland. It was a trip we will never forget!
Once we arrived back home, we quickly got to thinking about where our perfect wedding destination would be. Over the past few years, we have fallen in love with the Adirondacks. We both grew up within a few hours of the Adirondacks and spent time during our summer vacations in the lovely small Adirondack town of Old Forge. We both had such fond childhood memories of spending time there with our families, as well as many camping trips we have taken in the area of the last few years. Once we toured the Adirondack Woodcraft Camp and met Christina- we knew this was the perfect place. We couldn't think of a better place to say "I do" than being surrounded by the amazing fall foliage in the Adirondacks.
