What can I expect at a state park venue?

Michael and Clare are excited to share this special place next to Lake Superior with you. We have reserved two lovely, enclosed, stone park shelters (built in the 1930s!) for the ceremony and reception. These shelters are not big enough to accommodate all of our guests at any one time, so please expect to be comfortable in the areas outside each shelter. For dinner, there is seating available inside the Lakeview Shelter for roughly 60 people. This will be prioritized for elders or others who need shelter. There will be enough seating on the grounds surrounding the shelter for everyone else. (In the event of very poor weather, there will be tables set up in the Lady Slipper Lodge across the road for an additional ~80 people). Early June along the North Shore can have unpredictable weather and is often cool in the evening. We strongly encourage our guests to bring extra layers for warmth and consider bringing rain protection - whether that be an umbrella or raincoats. There will be plenty of fires both indoors and outdoors for extra warmth, coziness, and ~vibes~ :)

What's the dress code?

Feel free to dress up a bit! But don't forget there will be lots of opportunities for scrambling along the shore, sitting by campfires, and dancing in the dirt (to live folk music!) It is advised to avoid wearing thin heeled shoes. Michael says fashion first, but Clare likes to keep it practical (except for the white wedding dress...) follow your heart ;)

How do I get there?

Duluth is the biggest city near the wedding venue - about 45 minutes away. If you're coming from out of state, you may want to fly into either Minneapolis (MSP) or Duluth (DLH) and rent a car. Minneapolis is about 2.5 hours drive from Duluth, but is typically less expensive to fly into. We also plan to provide a shared document for anyone interested in carpooling - reach out to Clare or Michael for more details! Gooseberry Falls State Park is a straight shot 40 miles north from Duluth up the Scenic Highway 61. This is an iconic day trip for people who visit Duluth and the North Shore. Take in the views and set aside extra time to make some stops along the way!

Do I need an MN State Park Pass?

No! The entrance fees will be covered. You will need to stop at a small park ranger building on your way into the park. Just let them know you are there for the Stenzel/Kelly wedding and continue down the road. Note: after turning off highway 61 into the state park, follow signs to the campground/lakeshore (NOT the visitor center). The event will take place in both the Lady Slipper Lodge and the Lakeview Shelter.

Where do I park?

After passing the small ranger building, continue down the road for 0.5 miles until you reach a large parking loop. We would like to save parking in the Lady Slipper Lodge parking lot for those with limited mobility. You can not leave your car overnight unless you are staying in the campground. Uber and Lyft do not operate in this area.

Will there be an open bar?

While Michael would enjoy nothing more than an ice cold Pacifico on the rocky shores of Lake Superior, Minnesota State Parks do not allow alcohol on their grounds - especially for large catered events. We want to be respectful of the park's rules, so this will be a dry wedding. Plan to enjoy some fun mocktails during the event, and celebrate Clare and Michael's marriage with a drink elsewhere afterwards!

What type of food will be served?

There will be hors d'oeurves immediately following the ceremony, and a sit-down buffet-style dinner with walleye, gnocchis, a greek tofu dish, and various sides.

Can I bring my kids?

Ya dude! We love kids.
