Wedding Ceremony

Our wedding mass will be conducted in the Syro-Malabar rite. The Syro-Malabar Church is one of the Eastern Catholic Churches and follows the East Syriac tradition.

While this wedding ceremony has much in common with a traditional Roman Catholic Nuptial Mass, including the reception of Holy Communion, there are some traditions unique to the Syro-Malabar Church that you will see on our wedding day. Some of the key aspects of Syro-Malabar wedding traditions are described below.

The Thali

Thali refers to a sacred thread or necklace that is worn by married women as a symbol of their marital status.

The thali is an essential part of the wedding ceremony. During the wedding, the groom ties the thali around the bride's neck as a symbol of their marital bond and commitment. The thali is believed to represent the sacred bond between the couple and is considered an emblem of love, respect, and fidelity.

The Manthrakodi

The manthrakodi is a special garment or saree that is traditionally gifted by the groom's family to the bride during the wedding ceremony.

The selection and presentation of the manthrakodi are special moments in the wedding ceremony, and it is often accompanied by blessings, prayers, and well wishes from the groom's family. The bride receives the manthrakodi with gratitude and wears it with pride and joy.

The manthrakodi is a cherished item for the bride, and it often holds sentimental value as a reminder of her wedding day and the start of her married life. It may be preserved and passed down as a family heirloom to future generations.
