Things to Do

Walk the Appia Antica

Via Appia Antica, Roma, Italia

The Via Appia Antica or Appian Way is one of the oldest roads of Rome and served as an important access road into the city. Originally, the road ran all the way from Rome to Puglia (the heel). The paved stone road is nicknamed ‘regina viarium’; queen of the roads. That is because of how important the road was, but also because of the beauty of the landscape the Via Appia traverses. Part of the road (starting at the Cecelia Metella funerary monument) still has the old paving stones that clearly show the wear of the carriage tracks. The Via Appia Antica has an almost romantic feel with the green cypresses and many ruins that line the cobblestone way.

Eating is an event in Italy, often with multiple courses. However, breakfast/brunch is not a huge part of the culture. Expect to have a cornetto (pastry) and coffee in the morning, and that’s about it. Coffee is amazing, and is often consumed standing at the bar. Know that you will be judged if you order a cappuccino after 11 AM. And we will probably judge you a bit if you only order an Americano everywhere you go.

When eating at a restaurant, you will be asked to order all items (drinks, appetizers, and courses) at the same time, except for desserts which will come later. It is customary to have grappa (liquor) or limoncello after dinner as a “digestive” for your food.

It is not customary to take a box of food to go at the end of the meal; some restaurants may not even have “to go” boxes. Be prepared to finish your food at the restaurant.

When you want to pay and leave, you must ask for il conto (the check). Note that when asking for the check, this signals that you will be leaving immediately after paying. You can stay at a restaurant for as long as you like before paying, but after you pay you should not linger to finish your drink or order anything else.
