"We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in Him." - 1 John 4:16
What is a Catholic Wedding Mass?
If you've never been to a Catholic Mass before, it can seem a bit foreign and that's okay! In the Catholic Mass, Christians celebrate a form of ancient liturgy that is steeped in tradition. Some of the practices are similar to how the earliest Christians would have celebrated liturgy in the years after Jesus Christs' death and resurrection.
What does 'mass' mean? It comes from the Latin phrase "Ite, missa est", meaning "go, you are sent forth". This signifies the Christian's mission to live out their faith in the world after they leave the physical church building.
What is the main point of the mass and why is it so different from other Christian church services? The Catholic mass revolves around Jesus' preaching in John 6:25-54 when he says "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever" (John6:54-58). Catholics believe that, during the mass, the bread that is offered as a sacrifice by the priest becomes the true body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. This has been the belief of millions of Christians around the world since Jesus' teaching in Capernaum.
We are called to be in prayer for the entirety of the mass and fully participate with the Priest who is leading us toward the kingdom of God. We also offer our sins and our entire selves as a living sacrifice during the mass. It is a time to give thanks and unite ourselves with our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ who has not come to condemn the world but to save it.
If you do not share in this belief, we ask that you respect the sacrifice that is being offered on the altar and enter into the mass with a spirit of reverence and respect. We also kindly ask that you do not receive the Eucharist if you are not Catholic or are not in full communion with the Church and her teachings. The word 'Catholic' means 'universal', so we want you to know that you are welcome here, even if you do not share the same beliefs. Our prayer is that you feel a sense of peace and joy during the mass and know how loved you are by God!
What is the significance of a Catholic Wedding? Catholic Christians believe that words spoken in prayer are powerful and binding. Within any Christian sacrament, words are not just words; they have a deep spiritual significance and impact on the soul. Therefore, a Catholic marriage is different from a legal contract in that it spiritually binds two people together under God.
If you have any questions about Catholicism and what we believe, please ask us! For us, our experience of Catholicism has been less about a set of rules and far more about an experience of the heart. We have come to know and believe in the love that God has for us through the mass, the Eucharist, and the Body of Christ, the Church. We hope that you find a home here, too.
