do guests have to stay at the suggested hotel?

No! Guests are free to choose their accomodation, but please consider that the hotel will be the meeting point for transportation to and from the wedding venue to those guests joining us from outside of Chile. If you look for other accomodation options, we recommend staying in the "comunas" or counties of Las Condes and Providencia.

DO I NEED A VISA TO TRAVEL TO CHILE?

If you are traveling from the U.S. or Europe, you do not need a visa to travel to Chile - just a valid passport. Be sure to check it's valid for another 6 months before your departure. You should also have the address of your accommodation at hand for the customs officer.

IS SANTIAGO SAFE?

During the daytime, Santiago is generally a safe city. Like in most major cities, you should be aware of your surroundings and belongings at all times. At night, you should try and stay in the "comunas" (counties) of Las Condes, Providencia, Vitacura, and Lo Barnechea. While the center of the city or downtown area has many cultural attractions and should definitely be on your list of places to visit, it is not safe at night.

WHAT ARE SOME VALID FORMS OF PAYMENT IN CHILE?

Most places in Santiago accept international cards (e.g. museums, restaurants, etc.). Please note that some credit card machines will have a service charge for using an international card. If you plan to shop at local artisan markets, it's better to have some cash at hand. The currency in Chile is Chilean pesos (CLP). You can safely exchange your money once you're in Santiago. We recommend the company AFEX. If you plan to travel to other cities in Chile and have questions about accepted forms of payment, don't hesitate to reach out to us! We know that San Pedro de Atacama is a place where you should definitely be prepared to pay more with cash than card.

HOW DOES TIPPING WORK IN CHILE?

Tipping in Chile is quite different from tipping in the U.S. A card machine will be brought to your table when you are ready to pay, and the waiter/waitress will ask you "Deseas incluir el servicio/la propina?" "Do you want to include the tip?". By default, a tip in Chile is 10%. It's common practice to leave a tip, but depending on your experience, you can also lower the percentage or decline.

IS ENGLISH COMMON IN CHILE?

No, the average Chilean will not speak or understand much English. The ones who do are very friendly and will be excited to practice their English with you. However, we recommend learning some of the basics in order to communicate more smoothly during your daily outings.

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO GET AROUND SANTIAGO?

Public transportation in Santiago is great, and it's actually one of Dani's favorite things about living in Chile. The metro and bus "micro" systems are quick and extensive. To get a metro/micro card (called "bip"), you should go to any metro station and pay $1.550 CLP in cash for the card itself, as well as the amount you'd like to charge to the card. Uber and Cabify are also safe ways to get around the city. If your Uber driver asks you to sit in the front seat don't be alarmed, as Uber drivers are sometimes fined for operating while the company is still in talks with the government. Don't worry, it's still a safe and common way to move around.

IS THE TAP WATER IN SANTIAGO SAFE FOR DRINKING?

The quick answer is YES; however, for people traveling to Chile for the first time, we recommend not drinking tap water right away, as it is filled with far more minerals than you might be used to, for example, chlorine. At bars and restaurants, tap water is free. Ask for "un vaso de agua de la llave".
