San Sebastián offers so much more than just incredible food (though, let's be honest, James and I rarely make it past the pintxos bars to discover any of it). But if you’re able to tear yourselves away from the delicious eats (which we highly recommend), there’s plenty to see and do! From beautiful beaches and scenic hikes to charming museums and local gems, we’ve put together a few of our top recommendations to help you make the most of your time in this stunning city.

Siderias

The Basque people know how to do simple things extremely well - another prime example being their cider houses where you can taste various ciders and eat flame grilled juicy steaks (outside of the city).

We recommend booking in advance, especially if you're in a group, because they do fill up!

We still haven't visited a Siderias, because we've never been organised enough to book! If you do visit one, let us know how it is.

The two Siderias that we've had recommended to us many times:

Lizeaga

Lizeaga is a top-rated cider house just outside San Sebastián, known for its fresh cider served straight from the barrel. They offer traditional Basque dishes like "chuletón" (steak) and "tortilla de bacalao" (salted cod omelette), providing an authentic, rustic cider experience.

More information can be found on their website >>

Sideria Alorrenea

Alorrenea is a highly recommended cider house offering a cosy, intimate setting. Known for its fresh cider and welcoming atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to enjoy classic Basque dishes and learn about the cider-making process.

Wineries

If cider isn’t your thing, there are several txakoli vineyards with asador style restuarants, but we think you should save yourselves for the best one ...Bodega Katxina where we are getting married on Saturday!

All of the wineries in San Sebastian are located outside of the city, but it's easy to catch a taxi or uber from the centre of town.

Bodega Hika

Bodega Hika is a renowned Txakoli winery located just a short taxi ride from San Sebastián. Known for its exceptional Txakoli wine, it offers a beautiful setting where you can tour the vineyards and enjoy a tasting experience.

We visited Hika the weekend we got engaged. They were full for lunch but we got snacks and sampled a couple of their wines.

Bodega Ameztoi

Ameztoi is another fantastic Txakoli vineyard, requiring a taxi from the city. The winery is known for its high-quality wines, and you can enjoy scenic views of the vineyards while sipping on their refreshing Txakoli. The restaurant offers traditional Basque cuisine, making it a wonderful spot to enjoy local food paired with their exceptional wine.

Pinxtos Bars

Our very favourite activity in San Sebastian is to spend our days eating. We dedicate at least one day every trip to a pinxtos crawl, where we hop from one bar to the next. We created a hold page about our favourite places to eat in the city.

Monte Urgull

Hike up Monte Urgull for stunning panoramic views of San Sebastián and the coastline, and it's actually where James wanted to propose! (turns out it's closed in March). Visit the Castillo de la Mota at the top for the best views of the city. You can access the trail starting place from the Old Town.

Paseo Nuevo

A beautiful coastal walk along the cliffs, ideal for enjoying fresh sea air and views of the ocean.

At the end of the Paseo Nuevo coastal walk. This is an easy walk to do in 30 minutes and very accessible from the Old Town. The perfect break in between pinxtos bars.
