If you’re interested in things to do, libations and good eats, natural views, and charming downtowns, you’re in the right place! The bride and groom have included some of their favorites in all of these categories for you to browse and enjoy!
Enjoy spectacular views of Glen Lake, undulating sand dunes, and breathtaking views of the grandest of all dunes, with shimmering Lake Michigan as the backdrop. Wind through cool forests of sugar maple and beech trees. Take a moment along the way to enjoy a picnic, take a walk, or just linger in the sunshine.
Stopping at all twelve points on the 7.4-mile Scenic Drive will take about two hours.
The parking lot inside the Scenic Drive entrance serves hikers, bikers, and skiers as the Pierce Stocking Trailhead for the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and as the Shauger Hill Trail Trailhead.
The Pyramid Point Trail leads to a high, panoramic view of Lake Michigan, half a mile from the trailhead. This is one of the best views of the waters of the Manitou Passage and the Manitou Islands, which lie five miles offshore. For a quick jaunt, head back the way you came. For a longer hike with some extended uphill heart-pumpers, turn east from the dune overlook for a winding walk through some meadows and hardwood forests. To access the trailhead, take M-22 to Port Oneida Road, 3.7 miles north of Glen Arbor. Follow Port Oneida Road until it ends at Basch Road. Follow Basch Road east to the trailhead. The National Lakeshore charges a visitor fee of $20 per vehicle for a seven day pass or $40 for an annual pass. Mountain bikes are not allowed on any of the National Park trails. Pets must be kept on a six-foot maximum leash.
Fun Fact: One of Derek and Nicole’s “not” first dates was this very hike.
Named by Good Morning America as "The Most Beautiful Place in America" and voted one of America's Top 10 Family Destinations by Family Fun magazine, the Sleeping Bear Dunes are a must-see destination.
Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes Lakeshore encompasses a 60 km (35 mi.) stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline, as well as the North and South Manitou Islands. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park was established primarily for its outstanding natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations and ancient glacial phenomena. The dunes are a great place to spend the day hiking with the family, camping at the state park, or enjoying the shoreline—just be careful about running down the dunes without being prepared to climb back up. They’re steep!
The 17-mile Leelanau Trail provides a paved off-road connection between Traverse City and Suttons Bay. Running through the last of Leelanau County’s former railroad corridors, the Leelanau Trail features picturesque forests, farms, vineyards, lakes and ponds.
The Leelanau Trail is the only trail within the TART Trails network entirely owned and operated by TART Trails, Inc. It was born from a passionate community that continues to support it today. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall, the all-volunteer Leelanau Trail Maintenance Crew works on continual improvements to provide a world-class trail experience for trail users.
The Leelanau Trail bisects the land of DeYoung Natural Area (191 acres) for 3/4 of a mile. From the Cherry Bend parking lot, a Universal Access trail (0.2 miles) leads to a lakeside fishing and viewing platform, where you can see the protected shoreline of Cedar Lake (4500 feet). After your stop at the fishing pier, you can continue onto The Cedar Forest Trail (1/2 mile) which will take you through an enchanting hardwood conifer swamp with open views of an old field meadow.
There are four trailheads for parking along the trail at Cherry Bend Rd, Fouch Rd, Shady Lane and 4th St in Suttons Bay. Additional parking is available at the Leelanau Studios parking lot, just 1/3 mile east of the Cherry Bend Rd trailhead.
This 10,000-year-old glacial wonder near Leland is an iconic landmark that helps to define our unique Lake Michigan coastline. Whaleback’s fragile bluff rises 300 feet and can be seen from many vantage points in Leelanau. A viewing platform perched on the edge of this 40-acre natural area offers fantastic views of the Manitou Passage—especially at sunset. Huge oak trees and mature hemlocks create a cathedral like canopy that shelters bald eagles and the varied terrain hosts unusual plants, like the thimbleberry, which is extremely uncommon in Leelanau. Over 1200 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline was protected.
This MI RoadTrip Blog says it all. One of Derek’s favorite spots for rock hunting, quiet, and relaxation!
When we first got into rock hunting, Peterson Park was my golden standard for rock beaches. On our maiden voyage to the Leelanau Peninsula, we ended up at Peterson Park probably 5 times to walk the beach looking for Petoskey Stones and other unique rocks and fossils. We were quite unprepared, but we didn’t care. The fall color was peaking, the scenery was beautiful, and our coat pockets were full of rocks.
From the parking area, you are greeted with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, and there’s a viewing platform that is perfect for sunset. The stairs down to the water are well-maintained but a bit steep. Once you reach the bottom, there are rocks quite literally everywhere. The park offers under a quarter mile of shoreline, but it gives you access to miles of rocky coastline to walk and rock hunt.
At 342 acres, Houdek Dunes is Leelanau Conservancy’s second largest and most diverse preserve. The landscape ranges from hardwood forests featuring some of the largest white birch trees in Northern Michigan to Houdek Creek, a spring-fed trout stream and the primary tributary flowing into Northern Lake Leelanau. Then there are dunes. These hills and mounds of sand are the result of glacial sediments being exposed 4,000 years ago when the ancient Lake Nippissing receded. The trails skirt active blowout dunes, cross stretches of open sand scattered with tracks, and climb forested backdunes to views looking down.
Bohemian Beach - Drive north of Glen Arbor on M-22 to County Road 669 (Bohemian Road) and turn left. Drive to the end of the road, which ends at the beach.
Good Harbor Beach - Good Harbor Bay Trail, Maple City, MI 49630
Vans Beach - 205 Cedar St, Leland, MI 49654
Suttons Bay Marina - 326 Front St, Suttons Bay, MI 49682
Fun Fact: The Suttons Bay Marina holds a lot of history for Nicole & Derek to say the least. They took their first prom pictures here and, this is also where Derek proposed to Nicole.
Just 30 minutes from Traverse City, the village of Suttons Bay offers beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, great shopping, great food and enough wineries and breweries to keep you busy all day.
Dine at the restaurant where Derek and Nicole first met (The VI Grill) or, if you would rather, any of the three restaurants where Nicole worked during her time in the restaurant industry, including 45th Parallel Cafe, Boone’s Prime Time Pub, and Hop Lot Brewing Company. More information on these restaurants can be found in the Libations & Good Eats section of this page.
Glen Arbor is nestled among the Crystal River, the Glen Lakes and Lake Michigan. Due to its close proximity to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Maple City, and Empire – the area offers a variety of landscape and four seasons to enjoy exceptional year-round recreation. So many activities and things to do – you’ll discover there’s something here for everyone. Restaurants, an adorable downtown, a campground, and some of the best nature-based views and encounters can be found here!
Along the Leland River, as it feeds in Lake Michigan, is Leland’s Historic Fishtown - one of the last working and thriving fishing districts on the Great Lakes. Leland (Fishtown) features historic fishing shanties filled with shops, outdoor dining, gorgeous views, and ferries to the nearby Manitou Islands. Don’t miss a chance to walk out on the marina docks; one of Derek’s favorite fishing spots, grab a sandwich at Derek's favorite sandwich shop, The Cheese Shanty, and stop by the Dam Candy Store if you have a sweet tooth!
Northport is a picture-perfect town on the water at the tip of Leelanau County that is home to unique shops, galleries and restaurants. Northport is a small but mighty community, including countless events, lodging, beaches, wineries, the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Leelanau State Park, and more!
“As temperatures cool down, the colors heat up, painting Traverse City in stunning hues of reds, oranges, and yellows. Take the wheel, embark on a self-guided color tour, explore Old Mission Peninsula, or experience the sweeping views of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Take in the scenery on a hike or a bike ride, relax in an amazing spa, play a round of golf, or go on a wine tour. The magic of the season awaits you.”

Derek and Nicole’s favorite mixed drinks EVER, hands down, call Northern Latitudes Distillery their home. So many fun options to choose from, and free tastings! A second location can be found in Lake Leelanau, about a 10 minute drive from Suttons Bay on your way to Leland or Glen Arbor. If you like craft cocktails, don’t miss it! The Horseradish Vodka Bloody Mary & the Moonshine Margarita are among our top recommendations.
Tandem Ciders features hard cider; made with all local apples, cherries, honey, strawberries, and more! In addition, they frequently offer delectable crepes. A can’t miss spot for cider lovers!
“Early French Explorers called it "La Grande Travers." The Great crossing. A big piece of water, carved from mile-thick glaciers. Grand Traverse Distillery is a celebration of this. Water, after all, is at the heart of our spirits. Sifted down through dark, rich, Northern Michigan soil and gathering precious minerals that mix perfectly with locally sourced corn and grain. Crafted by hand, then aged, distilled, and bottled under our own roof (and watchful eye). No shortcuts. It's a journey of months and years. One that culminates in a single sip that makes the moment grand. Enjoy.”
In Nicole’s opinion, as well as the mother of the groom's opinion, some of the best red wines in Leelanau County can be found at Black Star Farms. Try a couple of our favorites; the Red House Red or the Artisan Red! Many fabulous whites to choose from as well if that is more to your liking. Additionally, some lovely sparklings that make for the perfect mimosa or midday celebration toast. The property is simply gorgeous, especially in the Fall!
Chateau Chantal, a beautiful winery nestled in the rolling hills of Northern Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula, has a rich history rooted in family and farming. One of the best views from a winery in the Leelanau / Grand Traverse County Area can be found here, and there is no shortage of viewpoints throughout the tasting room and winery grounds. We highly recommend a visit! Sparkling Cherry anyone? Grandma Judy's favorite.
When Derek and Nicole lived in Michigan, they were wine club members at Green Bird. The people are awesome, the concept is so cool, and the cider is fantastic! You may even get a chance to try a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie, or see some chickens & sheep. Worth the drive over to the Northport area to visit this special farm that is a hidden gem!
The Boathouse has a peaceful atmosphere with one of the most beautiful tasting rooms to enjoy, as well as a lovely patio to sit, sip, and watch The Narrows. The Boathouse is home to many award winners, so don't be afraid to ask for the stats. Lovely live music is a frequent treat, and if you are lucky, you might spot the mother of the bride!
“Many esteemed wine regions around the world flourish due to their proximity to large bodies of water. The Leelanau Peninsula, located on the 45th Parallel, is no exception. It is surrounded and protected by Lake Michigan, which allows farmers to successfully grow a wide variety of Vitis Vinifera such as Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, to name a few. The vast majority of Good Harbor’s vineyard acreage is located within five miles of Lake Michigan and all of it within the regionally distinctive Good Harbor basin. Come and try a glass!"
Low Bar is one of Nicole and Derek’s favorite places to meet up with friends for a fabulous cocktail & good conversation. Low Bar boosts Northern Michigan’s most extensive list of rare bourbon, scotch, tequila, gin, rum, and vodka. “A throwback into a modern era. Re-ingniting pre-prohibiiton with crafted concoctions stemming from old favorites. A quintessential hideout for those seeking the perfect beverage.
Mawby Vineyards is located right up the road from where the groom grew up. This adorable venue is perfect for those looking to explore a “bubbly” treat with a view.
Bowers Harbor Vinyards is a historic place in Grand Traverse! With over 30 years in the wine business, Bowers Harbor Vineyards, located 12 miles north of Traverse City on Old Mission Peninsula, was established in 1991. Initially a horse farm, the estate now boasts 20 acres of vinifera vines. An inviting tasting room occupies the former stable, and a friendly staff will welcome you and introduce you to our extensive selection of wines.
“Perched atop the highest point on the Leelanau Peninsula at the Gallagher Estate, we are a family farm and winery focused on using estate-grown grapes to honor our rich Northern Michigan legacy and Irish ancestry. Overlooking the Leelanau Peninsula at 1165 feet, our breathtaking sunset views and unparalleled wines make Rove a destination winery along the Traverse Wine Coast. Join us on our patio or in our cozy tasting room for wine tastings by the glass or flight along with live music, local bites, outdoor games, and more.”
“Situated in a beautiful 1931 red brick building, Rare Bird’s mission is to provide an unsurpassed dining and drinking experience in Traverse City. From our intimate reclaimed wood booths to the cozy and cool lounge and German bier hall style seating made from massive wood slabs that are sustainably harvested, we have a space for everyone to feel comfortable.
Our own beers and many more flow from the taps along with a selection of wines, ciders and spirits. Our menu features simple, familiar items served with a unique and exciting flair. Our ingredients are sourced locally when possible. Keeping with the local theme, our beer ingredients includes malt and hops grown in Michigan whenever possible. All of these qualities together make Rare Bird stand out in the crowd.”
The Parlor opened 80 years after the end of prohibition.
You could say that our atmosphere feels like a prohibition era bar, but we like to think that we offer a sense of nostalgia with the best craft cocktails in town. We specialize in fresh, handcrafted cocktails, a warm and cozy ambiance, and artisan tapa style food–all with excellent service. But beyond our reputation as one the best cocktail bars in Traverse City, we also offer a unique event space available for private parties, corporate events, wedding receptions, and everything in between. Located in the heart of midtown, Traverse City, on Cass and Lake in a historic train weigh station that was once occupied by a cherry warehouse. Come experience our atmosphere, delight in our food, and enjoy our craft cocktails.
Situated on Old Mission Point, Jolly Pumpkin is a fun, family oriented atmosphere with great food & brews! A favorite date night spot for Nicole and Derek as well! Visiting Jolly Pumpkin includes a beautiful, breathtaking drive on Traverse City’s Old Mission Peninsula.
A tourist attraction that gets A TON of attention year round! A beautiful beer garden with options galore for the craft beer lovers, as well as food and fun for the whole family. Make a smore by the fire, hear some live music if you are lucky, and enjoy the “up north” feel this atmosphere provides!
Fun Fact: Nicole and brother of the bride, Mikie, spent their summers walking this beer garden and serving up brews. College doesn't pay for itself, and there are certainly worse offices to work in!
Where it all began for Derek and Nicole… it may not be Pasta Night, but VI has a diverse, All-American menu with an option for everyone. We recommend checking out the dessert menu (Cherry Pie anyone? Maybe a Lava Cake with vanilla bean ice cream) and the scrumptious mixed drinks as well!
In need of a good pizza? Look no further! Roman Wheel Pizza is the best in town, and their awesome homemade daily dough and tangy marinara sauce is sure to satisfy your pizza craving! Whatever toppings you are looking for, they have them, with broasted chicken, salads, subs, & breadsticks too! Still not sold? Just ask Uncle, who doesn't come home without hitting Roman Wheel at least once. And "hurtin' em" while he's at it.
Best burger in town (if you ask the bride and groom), and do not miss the chicken tenders hand dipped with house-mixed batter. If you can get a spot downstairs by the cozy fireplace, we recommend it! Also, if you are wondering what a Massive Mary or Leelanau Lemonade might be, I encourage you to find out!
Put simply, classic breakfast & lunch in Suttons Bay. Hint, Hint, this is the only breakfast place in Suttons Bay, so save your time looking, this is the spot! 45th holds a special place in Nicole’s heart. We recommend the french toast or the pumpkin pancakes if you are craving something sweet for breakfast. As for those craving savory, the Skillet & the Morel Omelet are some local favorites! The lunch menu does not disappoint, with their turkey club and the perfect grilled cheese. Derek is known to order the Skillet with Whole Wheat toast if you are hoping to channel your inner groom.
This restaurant has been a go-to spot in Nicole’s family for as long as she can remember. It is a cozy, friendly, atmosphere filled with comfort food that is sure to hit the spot on a fall day. If you are a chili fan, go for it at this spot! If you love Broasted Chicken dinners, ask Uncle Marc, he recommends this one! Make sure to check the website / call to verify hours!
Here's where Nicole took Derek to get his first ever “fancy coffee." And by fancy coffee, we mean a mocha. This has been a go-to spot for the couple ever since! We recommend the Pedaling Beans Mocha especially, hot or frozen, however you like it. Pumpkin Spice is sure to be brewing in October as well! Take advantage of their evening hours if you so choose. Make sure to check the website / call to verify hours!
A local favorite in the world of authentic Italian & Seafood! The place to grab an artisan pizza or a Limoncello Martini if you are in the mood! That's Amore!
Another local favorite! A great burger, fun atmosphere, & awesome tater tots! Derek and Nicole always stopped here on camping trips to DH Day Campground in Glen Arbor, one of their fondest early memories. See if you can find your college flag on the ceiling or on the wall. Cash only!

Nicole and Derek went to dinner before their very first prom at this restaurant with a large group of Nicole’s classmates. Fun Fact, a mystery guest at the bar picked up the whole bill for around 25 people! It was incredibly generous, and to this day, we don't know who it was. However, we all wrote a thank you note and left it with the Harrington’s manager at the time later that next week.
We have never had a bad meal at this restaurant, and frequently go back for special occasions. The view of Grand Traverse Bay is exceptional, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the food is always on point! We highly recommend the Autumn Squash Bisque, the Grilled Tenderloin Salad, the Steak Burger, and the French Dip.
Fun Fact: The bride loves this spot so much, she is having her bridal shower here in the event dining room!
A modern twist on Mexican with some very yummy margaritas in pairing! The tacos rotate, so check out the menu & ask Nicole for margarita recommendations!
