Why Madisonville? Why the Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen's Pavilion?

Why Madisonville? Why the Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen’s Pavilion? Well . . . . . the Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen’s Association was officially organized March 25, 1941 and my Great Grandfather, Dr. Jesse B Heath, was the 1st and 3rd President (he enlisted in the Navy so his brother, Charles N Heath, took over as the 2nd President). My Grandfather, Dr. Ralph Cole, was the 38th President and my Stepdad, Brent Viator, served as the 47th President.
The term “sidewalk cattleman” was invented by the 1941 Madisonville Meteor editor, Henry Fox, well known for his wit. Fox wrote about people wearing cowboy boots around town and discussing cattle who didn’t own any cows. The name took the fancy of local doctor Jesse B. Heath, who organized the first meeting of the Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen’s association on March 25, 1941. The idea took hold and an organization was formed complete with rules for wearing cowboy boots and penalties to be assessed for infractions of those rules. The Associated Press and the United Press wire services picked up the story and the young Madisonville movers and shakers took advantage of the publicity creating an organization that has run continuously up to the present day affording the town of Madisonville an air of good humor and fun.

“Boot wearing regulations” state that owners of two head of cattle are entitled to wear cowboy boots; owners of 3 head may wear boots with one pants leg stuffed into the top of the boot; owners of 4 head may stuff both pants legs into the boots; and owners of 6 head of cattle may wear cowboy boots with both pants legs stuffed in AND spurs.
Today, as in past years, the custom is to dunk violators in the horse trough on the courthouse lawn. So beware when you come through Madisonville wearing cowboy boots and be prepared to defend your right!
