Things to Do

Welcome to one of our very favorite places! The foothills of the Blue Ridge and communities surrounding Charlottesville are filled with beautiful vistas, hiking trails for all levels, countless unique wineries, breweries, & cideries, quaint towns, the home of fried chicken, local artisans, and endless sites steeped in historical significance. We have spent many days exploring and know that there are so many jems we have yet to discover. For those of you that are able to spend a long weekend or extend your stay, you are in for a real treat! Either way, we hope you find time to take in at least one or two things that this special place has to offer!


For our purposes, we have focused on recommendations that are closest to or in Orange. Nestled on a 600-acre tree nursery with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Market at Grelen offers a delightful blend of shopping, dining, and outdoor activities. The venue is family-friendly, featuring seasonal pick-your-own fruit orchards and expansive walking trails that provide ample space for children to play and explore.


In late September, you can look forward to apple picking, as the orchards typically offer a variety of apples ripe for harvest during this time. Additionally, the café menu often features seasonal dishes highlighting the autumn harvest, providing a fresh and local dining experience. The Market at Grelen's combination of natural beauty and engaging activities makes it an ideal destination for visitors of all ages.

Just 10 minutes from Orange, Gordonsville is a charming small town with a rich history and a welcoming atmosphere. A stroll down Main Street reveals unique boutiques, antique shops, and cozy cafes, perfect for leisurely exploration. For history enthusiasts, the Civil War Exchange Museum, housed in the historic Exchange Hotel, offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past as a Civil War hospital and railway hub. Its preserved rooms and compelling exhibits tell the stories of soldiers, doctors, and nurses who passed through its doors.


The town is also famous for its unique connection to fried chicken. In the 19th century, Gordonsville earned the title “Fried Chicken Capital of the World” thanks to enterprising women who sold fried chicken to train passengers through the windows during stops. This tradition helped popularize fried chicken as a Southern staple and remains a celebrated part of the town’s identity.


Gordonsville’s blend of history, local charm, and culinary legacy makes it a delightful destination for a morning or afternoon visit. Note that Patch Brewing, The BBQ Exchange, & The Ice House are all in town.

While Jefforeson’s Monticello is sooo worth a visit, James Madison’s Montpelier is much closer and offers a rich and immersive experience that blends history, nature, and culture. Once the home of the fourth U.S. president and “Father of the Constitution,” this stunning estate provides a variety of ways to explore its significance. Guided and self-guided tours of the mansion delve into Madison’s life and legacy, while exhibits on the grounds highlight the contributions and stories of the enslaved community who lived and worked there.

Orange, Virginia, is filled with hidden gems and unique experiences for those seeking something out of the ordinary. A must-visit is the historic church and cemetery connected to the life of Edna Lewis, the renowned chef and “Grande Dame of Southern Cooking.” Her legacy and roots in the area are a testament to Orange’s rich cultural heritage.


For shopping enthusiasts, The Object on Main is a treasure trove of vintage finds, art, and eclectic decor, perfect for discovering one-of-a-kind pieces. Art lovers will appreciate the Orange County Art Center, where local artists showcase their works through exhibits, classes, and events. And for something truly whimsical, a notable landmark is the Giant Nutcracker Head, a 30-foot-tall structure originally a tar storage tank, now transformed into a festive figure. Located behind Cooper Tires on Blue Ridge Drive, it's an intriguing sight for those exploring the area. Located 25 minutes from Orange, Barboursville is the former hometown of James Barbour, governor of Virginia, friend of Thomas Jefferson. In fact, the magnificent home of James Barbour was designed by Thomas Jefferson. Fire destroyed the mansion on Christmas day of 1884, but the striking ruins stand vigil as a reminder of this 18th governor of Virginia. Plus this is where we got engaged! We highly encourage visiting this site just before or after tasting wine and exploring the octagon wine cellar. It is so fun to explore!

Merrie Mill Farm and Vineyard

Located 30 minutes from Orange, Merrie Mill is a charming winery with an excellent farm-to-table menu. The unique tasting room was designed purposefully to feel more like a creative, stylish, cozy residence than a commercial space. With eclectic antique furnishings, personal artwork, rich textures, colors, fabrics, and antique taxidermy, it has to be seen to be believed.


Reservations for the tasting room or terrace are recommended. No reservations are needed for the 10 parasol tables on the lawn. They are first come first serve so feel free to turn up if no reservations are available. There is an expansive outdoor area for children to run and play.
