Alaska in the Summertime

Alaska in the summertime includes long, sunny days and brief cool nights. In Homer, given its geographical location and proximity to the ocean, we have cooler summers with temperatures in the 50s to 70s. Homer can also be home to unpredictable rains, so have a rain jacket handy! At the end of the day, remember, there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices.

Our Top 10 Items Needed for a Happy Stay

We say "happy stay" because Alaska is less about fashion and more about practicality to ensure an enjoyable time! And happiness = dry

1. Waterproof boots or shoes, Xtratufs are a Homer favorite

2. Waterproof rain jacket

3. Beanie or another cold-weather hat

4. Fleece or some other warmer jacket

5. Bug spray (40% DEET recommended)

6. Extra wool or other synthetic, warm socks (seriously, more than you think you'll need)

7. Waterproof gloves

8. Layers, layers, layers (there can be unpredictable weather changes and you can't wear what you don't have with you)

9. Downloaded playlists, podcasts, and directions (you won't have cell service in some parts of the drive down to Homer)

10. If you plan to go fishing, we highly recommend bringing a large cooler through checked luggage. This is much more cost-effective than $350+ in shipping from Alaska.

Some Additional Hiking Necessities

If you plan on doing some hiking during your visit, here are some of our other recommendations:

1. Bear Spray (you cannot fly with it but purchase it once you're in the state)

2. Waterproof hiking boots or shoes

3. Small backpack with a first aide kit (yes, we've had to use it even on the short hikes - things sting out there)

4. Water

5. Mosquito net for your head or head with torso, especially if planning to hike in the thick woods
