Transport & accommodation options
Our wedding is taking place at Howsham Hall, which is situated between York and Malton. It is around 20 minutes’ drive from either. We would recommend staying in York, as there are many more accommodation options and there is lots to see if you plan to come for longer than just the weekend. We will also be hosting some informal welcome drinks on the evening of Friday 15th August in the centre of York for those that will be in town then.
When you RSVP, we’ll also help co-ordinate transport to/from York and the venue at the beginning of the day and the end of the evening.
Train
York is easily accessible from London on the train (between 1hr50m and 2hrs), with trains departing around four times per hour from London King’s Cross station. The centre of York is walkable from York train station.
Train bookings don’t open until three months before your travel date, and you can set alerts on the LNER website to remind you to book (online here).
Air
As mentioned, York is well connected to London via train, so flying into any of the London airports is a good option. It’s around a four-hour drive from central London if you are planning to hire a car.
Alternatively, Leeds Bradford airport is nearby (just under an hour’s drive; public transport is not as good) or Manchester Airport (two hours by train or car).
Car
There are number of accommodation options with parking (some come with an additional fee), and York is well connected to the Midlands and South via the M1 and A1(M), to Leeds via the A64 and across to Manchester via the M62.
York
York has lots of good accommodation options, including hotels, guest houses and Airbnbs. We’ve listed some of our recommendations below but please do get in touch if you need something more specific! A full list of options can be found here.
The Grand – York’s only five-star hotel, The Grand is close to York station and the centre of town, with valet parking for £35 p/n if you are planning to drive. A double room is between £180 and £350 p/n.
The Milner – Formerly The Principal, a solid four star option with lots of room options and a good location between the station and town. On site parking is an additional cost. A double room starts from £150 up to £350 p/n.
Hotel Indigo York – Located more centrally that some of the other options and a 20 minute walk from the station. It also has valet parking costing £15 p/n and on a first-come, first-served basis. A double room is from around £180 p/n.
Grays Court – Another posh option, Grays Court is a boutique hotel with just 12 bedrooms, situated inside the city walls and near the Minster. You can arrange parking before arrival for £20 per night or a 20-minute walk from the station.
Some other reliable options include Hampton by Hilton, Malmaison and Hotel du Vin. Good guest houses / B&Bs include The Apple House, 23 St Marys Guest House, The Bar Convent and The Fat Badger Inn.
There are plenty of Airbnb options, although the majority of those located more centrally can’t accommodate very large groups. Apartment options not listed on Airbnb include The Lawrance and York Riverside Apartments, although these can be pricey during peak times.
Malton
Malton is known as ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’ and has lots of independent shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes to explore, if you want somewhere quieter to stay. It’s also a great jumping off point for Castle Howard and the North York Moors (including where we got engaged!). You can find a full list of options here.
The Old Lodge – Rooms start at less than £100 p/n and just a 15-minute drive to Howsham Hall. Free parking on-site.
The Talbot, Malton – The best option in Malton with rooms starting from around £110 p/n and free parking at the hotel. A good location near the centre of the town and around 15-minutes from the venue.
Langton Hall & Holiday Lets – Aside from Airbnb, Langton Hall offers a range of self-catering options from two to 13 people.
