Do I need a Passport?
Virgin Gorda is a British territory, so you will need a passport.
What Currency does the BVI use?
US dollars. I would recommend bringing cash for your travel day as the cabs only take cash. There are ATMS on the island as well, but only a few. The one most readily available is at the bank in Spanish Town (port of entry).
What is all included with the yacht charter?
Your boat will come with a fully equipped galley, all linens, bath (not beach towels), face and hand towels, a barbeque, bimini, VHF, cellular phone, chart, cruising guide, binoculars, flashlight, safety gear, stereo with auxiliary jack & cockpit speakers, cooler and a dinghy with outboard. They have a variety of masks, snorkels & fins to choose from (free of charge!). You just help yourself on arrival!
Will I need to hire a captain for my charter?
Hiring a captain for you charter is only necessary if you do not have someone aboard that qualifies to be a captain. When you are sailing without a hired captain it is called bareboat chartering. We currently have a few of our guests that qualify as captains. We just need to work out who will be staying on which boats once we start getting RSVPs. If your boat decides they would prefer hiring a captain, you will have to give up one of your rooms and the fee is an additional $300 / day per boat.
How are the boats going to be divided up?
Once we have a total count on who will be joining us for the sailing portion of this trip we will get in contact with everyone to gather their preferences and then create boat groups based on that. There will have to be a captain for each of the boats so that will also play a role in who will be on which boat. Please feel free to reach out to Sean or I if you have any specific preference on who or which boat you would like to be on.
What if I want to charter a boat for just my family and a few select others on my own?
You are welcome to do this if you would like, but please communicate with Sean so that we can get a better discount. The more boats we charter the better the discount we receive.
What are the additional costs associated with chartering a sailboat?
Yacht insurance is $40/ Day with a maximum charge of $400 per boat. There is also a national parks permit of $55 / week per boat. Cruising Tax of $4/person/day. Cell phone deposit of $10 / boat to take the provided cell phone aboard. Virgin Island Search and rescue fee $20 / boat. Fuel cost is $4.50/ gallon. Mooring Fees vary from $50-$100 per night per boat. Trash collection $20/day per boat. Internet $40/day per boat. Hired Captain $300/day per boat (if you choose to go this route). All of the above adds up to approximately an additional $200 per person for the entire trip (Does not include captain).
Is there a security deposit fee for the boat?
There is a deductible per incident dependent on the size of your vessel: $1500 for yachts 31ft–39ft, $2500 for yachts 40ft–46ft, and $3500 for yachts 47ft or larger. Pre-authorization with a Visa or MasterCard, prior to starting your charter, guarantees this insurance. Only if the boat or dinghy is damaged will your card be charged. One person from each boat will have to put a card on file for this. This is done during checkout of the charter.
What is the cancellation policy with the yachts?
Once the charter has been reserved and the deposit has been received, it is considered non-refundable. Should a charterer be forced to cancel, all monies will be forfeited. However, by purchasing Cancellation Insurance, $200 per charter, it allows you the following:
- Cancellation more than 90 days before the charter: A full refund will be issued without penalty.
- Cancellation 90 to 61 days before the charter: A $300 administration fee will be deducted from the deposit monies. Alternatively, all funds can be held on account and applied to a new charter within 24 months.
- Cancellation 60 to 31 days before the charter: The penalty is 50% of the total charter fee. Alternatively, all funds paid can be held on account and applied to a new charter within 24 months.
- Cancellation notice within 30 days before the charter: The full charter fee is forfeited less the cost of additional extras. Alternatively, 50% of the total charter fee can be held on account and applied to a new charter within 24 months.
- Cancellation insurance can only be used once. In the event of cancellation, where cancellation insurance is used and a charter is rebooked, the new dates are considered non-refundable. ‘Rebooked’ charters are not eligible for cancellation insurance. In the event of a refund, credit card surcharges, wire transfer fees or any fees occurring through any other method of payment will not be refunded.
What will we do for food and drink while on our charter?
When chartering a boat, all of the groceries and supplies needed for your charter are called provisioning. Each boat will be responsible for their own provisioning, and this can be done online prior to getting to the BVIs or one can go to the grocery store the night prior to the charter. Provisioning your yacht is easy, and there are loads of great options, whether you are looking for a simple super market or gourmet options. You can also choose from package provisions, an itemized shopping list, and even pre-prepared meals. Keep in mind for bareboat chartering, besides one roll of toilet paper in each bathroom, no other consumables will be on board. We will also be going to land and going out to eat for multiple meals throughout the trip.
What if I want to stay on the sailboats, but I can't make it for all of the days?
Because the boats are paid for by each person staying on the boat separately, and it is split evenly, unfortunately it will be difficult to work out splitting the costs if you were to only be there for select nights. This is something you would have to work out with the rest of your crew. You would also have to arrange getting onto your charter by getting dropped off or picked up somewhere.
Can you fish off of the sailboats?
You can rent fishing equipment and fish off of the boats. All of the boats are registered fishing vessels, but you must have a fishing permit if you are over 18. Please follow the link below for more details. https://www.bviyachtcharters.com/british-virgin-islands/fishing-on-board/
Jeff we are rooting for you to catch some big ones out there!
What will we be doing most of the time on our charter?
There is plenty to do while you are on your charter. We will be island hopping and taking the dingy to shore to go to many different bars, beaches, restaurants and other attractions. There will be lots of snorkeling, swimming and deciding where we want to go next! See Things to Do tab for all of these options.
