Cathedral History
Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Redemptorist) Church has stood for over 135 years in the heart of Kansas City. Its long history begins when priests, who at the time were then referred to as "Redemptorists", arrived on the frontier towns of Westport and Kansas City in 1887 and developed a new congregation. In 1888, the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was founded, and to this day, the church is still widely referred to as “Redemptorist.” Today, the campus houses the church, two Catholic high schools focused on educating culturally diverse students with economic need; a social services center, providing to the metropolitan Kansas City area; and a senior center, serving the elderly. The church underwent a major renovation, first in 2000 and was refreshed again at its 100th anniversary in 2012. With the longest aisle in Kansas City, French Gothic architecture, stained glass windows, and five Carrera marble altars hand-carved in Italy, the Redemptorist Church is an unforgettable piece of history for the Kansas City area and its parishioners. The photo below was captured in 1928 and states how the church's interior is said to have more marble inside than any other church in the country.
