These are some of our favorite activities in the area! Flathead Valley is absolutely stunning and people come from across the world to vacation here. We feel so lucky to call this home and hope you will take advantage of this trip to explore!
Please note that May isn't the month we'd recommend for visiting Montana, but Logan fights fire during all the prettiest months! Some of the most popular destinations will still be closed for winter. At the bottom of the page, we've made recommendations for activities across the state that will be open if you plan to stay for longer!
Just 45 minutes from Kalispell, we hope everyone visits GNP while in town. Unfortunately, Going-to-the-Sun Road will still be snowed in. However, we still recommend visiting McDonald lake (Drive up) and Avalanche Lake (hike, check snow conditions). The Eastern side of Glacier (Many Glacier, Two Medicine, and St. Mary) is a longer drive from Kalispell but will be open earlier in the year. Many Glacier in particular has beautiful views and hikes. The park website is a great resource for more information.
Whitefish Trail is a 55+ mile recreational trail system encircling the community of Whitefish and Whitefish Lake. It is the gateway for hikers, bikers, runners, skiers, and equestrians to beautiful forests, prime wildlife habitat, sweeping vistas, pristine lakes, and inter-connected recreation areas.
For an easier hike and great views, Lone Pine is perfect. Just 10 minutes outside of town, there are paved trails to the outlooks, as well as expansive hiking trails.
Mountain Biking, Zip Lines, Scenic Lift Rides, Hikes, and more!
Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. You can rent a boat or kayak for the afternoon, take a charter to Wild Horse Island, or just go to Lakeside or Bigfork for a meal on the lake. If you are looking for a great view, a drive around the lake is a fantastic way to spend the afternoon!
**Some options are available seasonally due to weather
Horseback rides in GNP! We haven't personally rode here but have heard great things.
More information coming soon
A scenic drive around the west edge of GNP ending a few miles from the Canadian border, Polebridge is a small town with a shop and bakery worth the drive.
A scenic drive ending at a few lakes north of town. We love camping here!
Mini golf, corn hole, pickleball, and more + a bar and grill
This was the location of our first date, and many more after! They have fantastic pizzas and great gluten-free options
Good views and good drinks!
The best breakfast and brunch place in town. They do not take reservations so be prepared for a short but worthwhile wait to be seated.
Cause who doesn't love ice cream!
Local, saw-dust-on-the-floor, frosty mug bar. They also have great pizza!
Grayson's farm-to-table retail store! We're biased, but this is the best place to get all Montana-made souveniers and delicious beef!
If you plan to stay for more than a few days (we highly recommend you do!) Here are some activities across the state to enjoy.
Yellowstone should be fully open by May. As the nation's first national park, it is a must-see. It's also a great park to drive through if hiking isn't your favorite. It's about a 6 hour drive from Kalispell to West Yellowstone entrance, and we'd recommend exiting the park at the North entrance. This is Paradise Valley where Grayson has spent many summers working a guest ranch. If you make the trip, we recommend flying into Kalispell and out of Bozeman or vice versa to save the drive back.
One of the last true Cowboy Bars, the Old Saloon has people, views, and live music! It's one of our favorite places.
Dubbed “the most beautiful roadway in America” the Beartooth Highway climbs to an astounding 10,947 feet above sea level right along the east side of Yellowstone NP. It's absolutely stunning, and the small town of Red Lodge is worth the visit.
*Check website for conditions regarding snow
Stop here on your way to Yellowstone and take a tour through the underground caverns.
Virginia City and Nevada City lie along Alder Gulch about one mile apart, and is the site of the richest gold strike in the Rocky Mountains. Now a historic site, the town contains plenty of history and activities for the whole family
