For My Nanny & Papa

From the very beginning, you both have been my constant, my foundation, my biggest blessings. Nanny, you made sure I always had what I needed—new clothes for every school year, a warm coat for the winter, and a glass of chocolate milk waiting for me after school. But more than that, you gave me love in a million little ways, in every meal you made and every hug you gave. The time we spent in the kitchen together means more to me than you’ll ever know. I carry your lessons with me every single day, using the skills you might not even realize you taught me. (I make your chicken and dumplings at least twice a month.) You are my rock—the kindest, strongest woman I will ever know, and I am endlessly grateful for you.

Papa, my heart aches that you can’t be here today, but I know you are never far. I am so grateful I got to spend all my years until this one knowing you, loving you, and being loved by you. I still hear your wild WWII stories in my mind, still remember all the boy advice you gave me—because, somehow, you were always right. You were the greatest man I will ever know, and I wish with everything in me that Grayson had the chance to know you too. But deep down, I believe you and God sent him to me, for me. I know you’re watching, and I hope you’re proud.
