On a hot summer evening in Washington, D.C., two Congressional interns met at a happy hour. One destined for Harvard Law School and the other a year away from finishing his dual-degree at the University of Missouri.

The one intern headed to Harvard had the world at her feet. The other intern from the Chicago suburbs was trying to network his way to a low-paying but prestigious political job. Little did they know, that was the night they would both end up meeting their soulmate.

Heather, the aspiring law student, had just finished her degree from Saint Louis University. She stood there with a cold shoulder as Dean tried to get the pretty girl's attention. It didn't work, but that's when he asked the question that would change his life.

"Where did you go to school?" Heather replied "Saint Louis University, and you?" Dean said, " The University of Missouri." Heather knew a lot of people who went to Mizzou from growing up in the St. Louis area, and on a long shot asked if Dean knew Alex Smith. The answer -- yes. Dean and Alex had lived on the same floor freshman year and had become good friends. Heather's freshman year roommate, Bridget Stone -- now Bridget Smith ;) -- was dating Alex. The mutual connection gave Dean a chance to smooth talk his way into a date with Heather and the two really hit it off from there.

After six years of dating and living thousands of miles apart for the majority of their relationship, Dean proposed to Heather on July 4th, 2019. Heather said, "Of course," in front of the Edgartown lighthouse on Martha's Vineyard surrounded by family and a group of teenage girls who filled in for the photographer, who was running late.
