Roddy and I's story starts a few months before we met, much like a classic rom-com. It began with me heading to college and deciding to spend a summer with my grandmother. My grandfather (Papa) had passed away in November 2021, and during his funeral in Odessa, I became much closer to my grandmother (Mimi). We spent Christmas together, and I made a life-changing decision, though I didn’t realize it at the time. I decided to spend the summer with Mimi, helping her organize her house (I love fixing up furniture). After some searching, I found an internship at First Odessa. So, in May 2022, I left my Lynchburg townhouse and made the 1800-mile journey to Odessa, with a family trip to Gatlinburg along the way. At the start of the summer, I promised myself I wouldn’t bother with boys—I was here for Mimi. I worked only three days a week so we could spend time together. We cleaned out a storage unit, sold furniture, tackled the garage (sort of), and watched Downton Abbey from start to finish One day, Julian needed to take photos of the Permian Flag Team, and I tagged along to see the school my mom graduated from. As we were leaving, Julian pointed to a picture high up on the wall and said, “That’s Roddy Poindexter. He goes to our church, went to Harvard, and is always around.” I had no idea why he thought I’d care. A week later, at a post-staff-meeting lunch at Grub Burger, Roddy showed up. He introduced himself, but didn’t say much to me. I thought his hair was too long, and I didn’t care when others at the table went on about how smart and weird he was. We ran into each other at church events, and eventually, we started talking more. I thought he was a good friend, but nothing more. One day, he invited me to lunch after church with his friends. When they canceled last minute, it ended up just being the two of us. He was smart, kind of pretentious, but we agreed the important stuff. Still, I wasn’t interested in dating. At youth camp, where I was a leader and photographer, Roddy was one of the few people I knew. He seemed to be around me all the time. At the end of the trip, he nervously told me he liked me, and from that moment, we were inseparable. We debated whether dating was a good idea since I’d be leaving Odessa in a month, but we couldn’t stay apart. We ended up doing long distance for 10 months while I finished school. In the summer of 2023 Roddy flew out to Lynchburg and together we made the trek back to Odessa for good this time.
