Montserrat is a spectacularly beautiful Benedictine monk mountain retreat about one-hour northwest of Barcelona by train. Montserrat Monastery is of significant religious importance (it is said that an image of the Virgin of Montserrat appeared in a cave in the mountain), and the natural beauty surrounding the monastery is breathtaking. You may have seen the needle-shaped peaks from our wedding venue!
And in 2025 the monastery celebrates its 1000 year existence!
Montserrat is easiest reached by car: about 50 minutes from Barcelona, and only 30 minutes from Igualada.

We love our city! Here are some of our favorite things to do
The Sagrada Familia is an absolute must-see when you are in Barcelona. Tickets are 26,- per person and include an audiotour that tells you everything about Gaudi's work.
One of our favorite things to do on the weekends is stroll through the different neighborhoods of Barcelona. Each part of the city has its own vibe.
El Born is probably the most popular and well-known area of the city. It is known for its small streets, filled with little boutiques, bars and restaurants.
In El Born you will also find:
- Basilica Santa Maria del Mar
Gràcia is a very cosy neighborhood. The area in up-town Barcelona is famed for its laid-back bohemian atmosphere, bustling squares and vibrant bar and café life. It's usually quieter than the El Born area.
Things to do:
- Visit Gaudi's first house: Casa Vincens
- Festa Major de Gracia - 15-21 august: a festival where the inhabitants compete eachother for the 'most beautifully decorated street'.
Barcelona has beautiful beaches. If you go a bit more north, they tend to be a bit more quiet (although it will still be summer, so be prepared).
Go to enjoy a day in the sun, grab a bite in any of the restaurants with sea-view, or rent a bike to ride along the boulevard (very fun!).
Looking for a day away from the city? We definitely recommend going to Sitges! Sitges is a charming coastal town about 40km south of Barcelona and we love going there!
The town has a nice centre with shops, a beautiful boulevard leading to its iconic church and a very vibrant, gay-friendly vibe.
Sitges is the perfect choice for a day away from the crowd, it's only a 40min train ride away, and above all: it's where we got engaged!
How to get there?
Take the R-train (renfe) with destination Vilanova de Geltru or Sant Vicens de Calders from trainstation Passeig de Gracia.
Restaurants:
- Montroig (nice garden in the back)
- Cinnamon: vegan Indian
Whenever we want a relaxing day, we love going to Parc de la Ciutadella. From the Arc the Triomph you walk directly into the parc that has a very relaxed, but lively vibe. While walking around or sitting with a book, there is always something going on around you: dance classes, music and a lot of tight rope walking.
