South African Guests: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Attending Our Wedding
We are so excited to have you join us for our wedding on May 17, 2025! To make your journey smooth, here’s a detailed, step-by-step guide from obtaining your passport to arriving in the U.S. for our big day. Since many of you may be flying for the first time, we have broken everything down to make it as clear as possible.
Step 1: Get Your Passport (If You Don't Have One Already)
You will need a valid South African passport to apply for a U.S. tourist visa. Here’s how to get one:
- Option 1: Apply online at the Department of Home Affairs website.
- Option 2: Visit your nearest Home Affairs office to apply in person.
- Important: Ask for your passport number when applying so you can start your U.S. visa application while waiting for your physical passport.
- Processing Time: Passport processing can take 4-6 weeks, so apply as soon as possible.
Step 2: Apply for a U.S. Tourist Visa (B-2 Visa)
- Once you have your passport number, you can start the visa process.
- Fill Out the DS-160 Form (Online Application for a U.S. Visa) Complete the form here.
- Ensure all information is accurate and matches your passport details.
- Print and save the DS-160 confirmation page.
- Pay the Visa Fee & Schedule Your Interview
Visa fee: ~R3,500 ZAR
- Schedule an appointment at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate here.
- Prepare Your Visa Documents
- Valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months after travel)
- DS-160 confirmation page
- Visa appointment confirmation
- Passport-size photos (per U.S. visa requirements)
- Proof of accommodation and wedding invitation (We will provide this)
- Financial proof (bank statements, employer letter, or sponsorship letter)
- Return flight itinerary (if booked already)
- Any other supporting documents as required
- Attend Your Visa Interview
- Arrive early and dress professionally.
- Answer questions honestly about your visit.
- If approved, your visa will be stamped in your passport and returned within a few days.
Step 3: Book Your Flights
Once you receive your visa, it’s time to book your flights. Follow these steps carefully:
- Recommended Airline: We will be using Qatar Airways.
- Estimated Cost: Round-trip flights may cost between R18,000 - R30,000.
- Departure Airport: You will fly out of O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg.
- Arrival Airport: You will arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
- Flight Route: Likely one layover in Doha, Qatar, before continuing to Los Angeles.
- How to Book: Visit the Qatar Airways Website or contact us for assistance.
- Baggage Rules: Qatar Airways allows 1-2 checked bags (23kg each) depending on your ticket type. Carry-on is limited to 7kg.
- Important: Once booked, save a copy of your ticket and itinerary.
Step 4: Airport & Flight Process
- Check-in: Arrive at the airport 4 hours before departure. Go to the Qatar Airways check-in counter with your passport and ticket.
- Security Screening: Follow instructions, remove metal items, and comply with regulations.
- Boarding: Check the screens for your boarding gate. Boarding starts 45 minutes before departure.
- Layover in Doha (Near Dubai for those that don't know): Follow the connecting flights signs to your next gate.
- Arrival in LAX: Go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Answer questions honestly and present your documents.
- Baggage Claim: After clearing immigration, collect your luggage and meet our team outside.
Step 5: Customs & Entry to the U.S.
- Customs Form: Complete electronically at the airport if required.
- Declaration: Do not bring any cash on hand over R5000, do not bring or pack any food, or gifts. On the declaration form, state: NOTHING TO DECLARE.
- Prohibited Items: Avoid fresh fruits, meats, and agricultural products.
- Final Steps: Once cleared, proceed to baggage claim, collect your luggage, and exit.
Step 6: Confirm Your Arrival & Transportation
- RSVP with Us: Confirm your attendance so we can arrange airport transportation.
- Airport Pickup: We will coordinate transportation from LAX.
- Alternative Transport: If you arrive separately, we will provide instructions to reach your accommodation.
