The  Mackey House History 

-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;1898: A powder magazine, used to house ammunition, is built near the land, and the magazine keeper’s home is built on the land that eventually becomes Red Gate Farms. Today, you can still see remnants of the powder magazine off Ogeechee Road, and the keepers’ home is still standing on Red Gate Farms.&nbsp; -&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;1931: Harry E Martin Jr. purchases the land and starts a dairy farm. Harry and his wife, Mamie, named Red Gate Farms after a cousin who passed in WW1, but always wanted to start a farm named Red Gate. Harry was considered a folk hero when he led the fight to lower milk prices that eventually resulted in fair milk prices for everyone.&nbsp; -&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;1997: The Martin’s granddaughter, Laura, and her husband, Fred Mackey, build their dream home at Red Gate Farms. Once the house is complete, their daughter, Tonya, gets married at the home. Afterwards, the Mackeys begin receiving inquiries from friends wanting to hold their own events at the home and the Mackey House event venue is born. - 2024: Jack and Aimée get married!&nbsp;&nbsp;

SAV is approximately 10 miles (20 mins) from downtown Savannah. There are plenty of transportation options including Uber, Lyft, private taxis, and rental cars. We will be providing transportation to and from The Mackey House on Saturday.

Other Options

Getting to Savannah

We currently have blocks at the Hilton Garden Inn, the Andaz, and The Alida. Additionally, we have discount codes for the Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn Express. All are walking distance from each other.   There is an abundance of hotels in downtown Savannah! We have put some other options below. We also highly suggest checking out Airbnb and VRBO rentals as they are often better priced and exclude hotel destination fees.   Pro tip: Check with your hotels and Airbnb/VRBO hosts before booking tours or tickets. Many offer discounts on popular tours.   Caution: Savannah is one of the most haunted cities in America. It is a good idea to Google prospective hotels to see if they have any ghostly activity. The Marshall House is a notoriously haunted Savannah classic...book at your own risk.

Our farewell brunch will be held on the 2nd floor in the Grand Salon on Sunday 11/17. Old Savannah Tours

Savannah Riverboat Cruises was established in Savannah, Georgia in 1991 under the direction of experienced Captain, Jonathan H. Claughton.&nbsp;Savannah’s antebellum charm, with flowing Spanish moss hanging from stoic live oaks and welcoming shady squares, hearkens back to the days when paddle driven riverboats full of tourists and locals dotted the Savannah River. All riverboats feature two climate-controlled dining decks and an open-air third deck.&nbsp;Decked out in traditional red, white and blue riverboat colors, these elegantly appointed boats cannot help but draw visitors back to a time when gentility and relaxation was always in vogue. The riverboat tours leave the dock right next to the exact location where General Oglethrope first landed on the river front and head upriver, into the Port of Savannah, and then turn around and head back under the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge and past the historic river front.&nbsp;The tours continue downriver passing the world famous Waving Girl, Florence Martus, through the ship yards and just past the tip of Hutchinson Island and Old Fort Jackson.&nbsp;There, the boat circles back upriver to arrive gently back at the dock.

Ships Of The Sea Maritime Museum

Telfair Museums offers a unique understanding of Savannah’s place in our collective American past through art, history, and architecture. Located in Savannah’s Historic District, Telfair Museums is comprised of three unique sites (Jepson Center, Telfair Academy, and Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters).&nbsp;Tickets include a visit to all three sites and are valid for one week from time of purchase. The Jepson Center is a stunning example of modern architecture. Telfair Academy is the oldest public art museum in the South and the first art museum founded by a woman. The Owens-Thomas House &amp; Slave Quarters allow visitors to explore the complicated relationships between the most and least powerful people in early 19th century Savannah.
