Exchange Rates
It's best to avoid exchanging cash in your home country or at airport kiosks; instead, use your debit card at local bank ATMs in Italy to get Euros upon arrival for the best rates and lowest fees, or carry a small amount of Euros for initial expenses like tips or small purchases. Many places in Italy accept major credit cards and digital payments, so rely primarily on those for larger transactions.
Why you shouldn't exchange money in your home country:
Poor Exchange Rates:
Currency exchange services and banks in the U.S. often provide less favorable exchange rates than you'd get in Italy.
Fees and Commissions:
You might be charged high fees or hidden commissions when exchanging money before you leave or at the airport upon arrival.
Recommended Strategy:
1. Carry a small amount of Euros:
.
Before you leave, order a small amount of Euros from your bank in the U.S. to have for initial expenses, such as tips, transportation from the airport, or a quick snack.
2. Use ATMs upon arrival:
Once you arrive in Italy, withdraw Euros from a local bank ATM. Look for ATMs from well-known global brands, as these often have better rates and lower fees.
3. Leverage credit cards:
Most shops, restaurants, and cafes in Italy accept major credit card brands.
4. Consider a fee-free debit card:
Look into options like Schwab Bank or other banks with international ATM fee refunds to get the most out of your money.
5. Minimize cash exchange:
Avoid exchanging large sums of cash, as this is often the most expensive way to get foreign currency.
Important Considerations:
Small denominations:
When you withdraw Euros from an ATM, you can often get them in smaller bills, which are more useful for tips and small purchases.
Digital payments:
For convenience, use digital payment methods like Apple Pay on your phone for transactions where available.
